Wish to keep email address

[link to this post]

After 7 years with Free-Online/Plusnet, I'm moving house and changing ISP to Be.

In the past, advice was given to downgrade the account to a a PAYG dialup account and to use webmail to access email - is this still the recommended course of action?

Thanks

Ghuli

Yep.

Although you can still access your mailboxes via pop3 or imap exactly as you do now. The only thing you can't do is send via PlusNet.

Since you can't send email via Plusnet (and Be don't offer an email service with their packages) you'll have to make other arrangements for *sending* email. This could be googlemail or other free provider. Googlemail can be operated via your email package (Outlook express, Thunderbird etc) - just follow the instructions on the website.

Yet another good reason for ensuring your email address(es) are not dependent on your ISP.

This is not a criticism of Plusnet, just an acknowledgement of the very reasonable fact that ISPs don't want to handle outgoing email that doesn't originate on their own connections. It's primarily to prevent spammers abusing their systems.

Even easier, if you change your email account settings to use the logon credentials and outgoing mail server of your new ISP but leave everything else as it is (specify your Plusnet email address as the sending email address and reply to address and use Plusnet's POP3 server) eveything should work and you won't have to change your email address. None of the ISPs I have used in the past block this.

He's going to Be. No email servers. That's the basic point of the thread.

Their own FAQ suggests that they have an SMTP server - see here.

If that's the case, the OP can use BE's outgoing server.

This page also seems to suggest that they do offer e-mail!

edit:

C:\>nslookup smtp.bethere.com
Server: resolver2.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.220.220

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: smtp.where.secureserver.net
Address: 208.109.80.149
Aliases: smtp.bethere.com, smtp.secureserver.net

Sorry, I should have been clearer. Be don't include email with their ADSL packages. It's an extra cost. Can you use their SMTP server without buying their email? Don't know. That's one for the Be forum.

None of this is a complaint against Be (or plusnet). I've considered going to Be myself, mainly for the faster upstream speed. Recently I recommended a friend to move to Be and it's working well, especially with their fairly high usage.

You were right in the first place.

If you could use their SMTP server for free it would seem odd if you couldn't use the POP3. If you can use them then they have email. But without paying 2 per month they don't provide email. So logically you cannot use the SMTP.

I've never heard of anyone using Be SMTP without buying the email add-on.
