Low internet speed can you help?

For the last say month or so I've been getting no more then about 85 kb/s download speed. I used to get over 100 kb/s.
All speed tests i've done report my speed as being around 0.7 mb again at use to get at 1mb sometimes 1.5mb.
PN accorrding to the member centre show my connection as 1000kb was showing as 750kb till recently.

So whats going on, is there anything that can be done to fix the problem?

For a start, a connection of 1120kbps will only give an IP Profile of 0.75Mbps, so Plusnet's figure of 1,000 will change soon to reflect that.

Your issues I would guess, stem from the Target SNR the exchange has set you. If your long line was stable with few errors, when your router makes a connection, it would have a Noise Margin of 6 dB. Your noise margin is sitting at 12 dB at midnight, so presumably your Target SNR may be as high as 15 dB if you connected during daylight hours. Somewhere in the 2700 HGV menu, it will state the noise margin at connection.

In simple terms, and generally speaking, it sounds like your line is both long and unstable. As a starting point, you could try plugging the router into the master socket test point and see if that improves the connection speed stats.

Well is there anyway to get my noise margin lowered so i can get more then 0.75mbps?
As with my older provider (pipex) and i'm sure in the first month or 2 with PN I had 1mbps (if not more).

I've just done a power cycle with my router and my noise margin is still at 12 dB, would a different router help me as I have a netgear d834g that I swapped out for the router I'm using now.

My line is long as I was one of those people who had to wait for bt's extended reach program to get 512 when I first got broadband all those years ago.
As for the idea of plugging my router in to the master socket test point, that option is not open to me as I don't have one probly due to having a double socket faceplate.
I could try cutting out the phone extenstion cable that my router plugs in to but then I would have to go wireless or find a lan cable that is say 5 metres in lengh.

You can pick up a 10m Belkin cable at PCW for about �15. I did this with mine to replace the "bog standard" cable pair for a diy extension.

The very fact you're plugged into an ext cable could well be a factor, mine dropped the speed from a then typical 4,500 down to approx 3,700kbps when I last tried it. The 'Ringwire' mod would be worth trying for you.

If your master socket looks as if it will split into two halves, as per the kitz site above, then it should have a test socket, and it would be worth making the effort to try it and tell us the results.

A different option from wireless would be to use 'Homeplug' devices, as I do. These use the electric cabling in your house to transfer data. Quite good.

The router at the socket and a 5m Ethernet cable to the computer is much better than most plug-in phone extensions.

Well I haven't got a ringwire as far as I can tell in my master phone box and the other phone box i have I've disconnected it (the ring wire) but not cut it off.

I know for a fact there is no test socket behind the master box, this may be down to having a double phone socket faceplate e.g. for 2 phones or in my case a phone,sky boxes and my router.
Homeplug is not an option to me as I don't have any free power sockets or ones located in the right places in my house to be of use.

So the way I see it now in regards to what options i have left to me are -
1) plug the router directly in to the master phone box assuming you can get a routers phone plug to normal plug adaptor. Then connect my computer wi-fi to it.

2) do the same as 1 but use a long Ethernett cable.

So which is the best option to go for?
In terms of set up 1 is the obvous one to go for but would wi-fimean I still get speed issues / connection problems expect the cause of the problem will of changed?

I would prefer using the Ethernet option, especially if you intend to upgrade the router firmware, or change the router security settings. Although you could always disconnect the router from the adsl connection and take it to your computer to do these things.

If you have the wireless gear already, then give that a try, it'll cost you nothing. I would suggest setting the wireless security up with the router in its present location, in case you get locked out while inputting the security protocols/passwords etc.

What version is your DG834g? I'm using a v4 with DMT, but you can't use DMT with the v2 or v3. If you didn't know, DMT can 'adjust' your Noise Margin a bit lower.

I have a feeling that my netgear route is verison 2 as its at least 3 years old i think.

Oh I don't use wireless security, I know I should its to much a pain to set it up and then get all my wi-fi devices to work. Besides I can see from my router what computers are using my internet if I need to.
