Re: Low internet speed can you help?

[re: dieselglider] [link to this post]

Ok well I've now moved my router so that it's now connected directly to the master phone socket via a microfilter and I now use wi-fi only.

below are my line statiscs b4 and after the change
Incoming: 1120 kbps
Outgoing: 448 kbps

Current Noise Margin: 12.0 dB (Downstream) 10.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 63.0 dB (Downstream) 31.5 dB (Upstream)

after -
Incoming: 1120 kbps
 Outgoing: 448 kbps
12.0 dB (Downstream) 10.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 63.0 dB (Downstream) 31.5 dB (Upstream)

yes there the same, so how come speed tests show that my download speed has gone up to about 120 from 85?
However having said that trying to download from websites like fileshack.com i still get about 85.

So has my internet speed improve or not ? If not do you think it will improve?

cheers for the help.

I was really hoping that would have improved things for you, and am a bit bemused that the figures are exactly the same as before.

You could have a look at the thread labelled 'Target Noise Margin' in this same Plusnet forum, and see if that may offer any help.

For reference, the normal noise margin at sync is 6 dB. If the exchange equipment (DSLAM) decides that your connection is too unstable, either because of multiple re-syncs or errors in the data flow, it will raise this noise margin to 9 dB. If still unstable, then it will be raised to 12 dB, and finally 15 dB. This has the effect of decreasing your connection sync rate to stabilise the connection, and is automatically negotiated between your router and the Dslam.

What can you do now? Well, read that other thread and see if you get any guidance, or maybe buy another router which will work with DMT software. Basically, DMT misleads the Dslam into granting you a lower noise margin, thus increasing the sync speed.

This link explains a bit about sync rates, and profiles granted accordingly. So judging by that, your typical max download speeds at the moment should be in the region of 85 KB/sec (680 kb/sec).

how do you tell if the netgear is v4 or not short of buying it?, as so far sites like dabs.com and ebuyer.com don't mention if its v4 or not.

Look at the label on the bottom, it will say DG834Gv2 etc, unless it's a version 1 which I believe just says DG834G.

There are a few others, such as DG834GT, Speedtouch 585v6 (with older firmware). Do a general forum search for DMT.

Not sure if still the case but some Belkin RJ11 leads have been wired wrong, i.e. the centre pair are from different pairs, which makes the cable as a good a poundsaver special

General rule is that if you have no test socket, then its only worth testing at the master socket if you disconnect all of the telephone extensions

I can relate to a lot of whats being said here, on the point of being bemused about figures being the same...my line probably performed worse in the test socket than it did in the first internal extension.

A netgear V2 and v3 would show marginal drop in Db thus increasing the sync speed but the connection was very unstable.

Connecting a V4 and the Db gave a higher reading, 63.0db as opposed to 57-59db and the sync speed would never go above 1312kbps.

Using a BT 2110 that plusnet sent out noise was about the same as the V4 but sync speed higher that 1312kpbs but again still seeing unstability.....welll not seeing it now since not in the country but sure it will be the exact same when get back and the chances of BT coming out are slim to none and from past experience it wouldn't make much difference if previous experience is anything to go by.....

So Plusnet....send a guru out...or someone with a bit of knowledge would be a starting point!

Do what I did, walk into PC work, pick it up and pricematch it with whoever is cheapest.

I got the V4 for about 30, it will be either the V4 they have or perhaps newer if they have released a newer one
