Check my speed stats please

[link to this post]

Hi folks

My account went live on 9 Dec, it is a Your Way Option 2 (Monthly Contract)

I have not seen d/l speeds above 2Mb yet, and I know about the many posts about lack of speed etc.

I am using the supplied Thomson router.

Can you just check the stats I have atm to see if there is anything I should do yet?

I won't suggest using the BT speedtest because it usually doesn't work but what does this say

Were you on a fixed speed line before?

It used to be quite common for a thing called the IP Profile to get stuck on 2000 when upgrading to Max, but it was supposed to have been cleared.

I think you should run the BT speed test as that gives the authoritive statement of what your profile is. The one you got from the other link is the Plusnet copy of that, and as well as the BT one possibly getting stuck it can also happen that the Plusnet copy diesn't get updated when it should.

The BT one does sometimes not want to run at busy times, as has been said. Also it takes an age (up to 3 minutes I have seen) to do anything after you put in your phone number.

In either case you need to raise a ticket with Plusnet support, but if you can show them the BT test result as well as their own it makes it clearer.

For information on the IP Profile system read this FAQ, there are explanations above and below the table.

There you go. The BT profile is correct, but unless the Plusnet copy has changed in the last few minutes then it hasn't been updated by the system .

That is a lot easier for support to fix than a real stuck BT profile would be .

The lower of the two profiles will always be what limits your download speed, not the sync/connection speed itself, although as I expect you now know from the link that the sync sets the profile. Just a delay of possibly 5 days for the BT one to rise, then the Plusnet one should be less than a day after. But things can go wrong like with you.

Can you PM me your username or a ticket number from your account please? I'll have a check over and make sure everythings set up correctly.

The above post has been made by an ISP REPRESENTATIVE (although not necessarily the ISP being discussed in the post).

Have sent a PM to chrisparr.

Update:

After running the various tests and submitting the details I got a reply that the test result summery was inconclusive and was not completed.

Turned on the sw and hw firewalls, turned off router for about 5 mins. Swiched back on and let it settle for another 5 mins, ran a test at http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
and got the following result:-

4866 kbps (608kB/s) 383 kbps (47.9kB/s)

Fastest since service went live so must have flipped something so will keep an eye on it.
Nothing else checked yet from the list of things suggested from the reply from PN yet.

Cheers.

Ten re-syncs in an hour will cause the exchange systems to increase your target noise margin by at least 3dB. This will reduce your maximum possible sync by 500-750kbps. If you have done that in the past it could be part of your problem.

Once that happens the only official solution is to leave it connected for 10-14 days and hope the system decides to lower it again.

Edit - looks as though it is already at the maximum auto-setting of 15dB.
