They throttle by package, protocol and time of day, nothing to do with usage.

In reply to:

i find it hard to believe that a line that hasnt been used in 3 months would have that sort of throttling.

I am sure a lot of other customers would find it hard to believe too!

Without significant technical knowledge, they probably do not have a clue their connection is subject to throttling and that in particular Plusnet circumstances will actually be throttled to slower than dial up!

Option 1, yes that's 50Kbps [dial-up is 56Kbps], 0.05Mbps on a potential 8Mbps connection.

Of course they are open and honest about it, but ignorance is bliss..it's still [cough] 'broadband'.

I do not see how you can compare an ISP like Be* (LLu) with one like plus net its like saying my dial up will not download as quick as my Broadband connection .

Whereas with Plusnet it is likely, in certain circimstances, that the opposite is true!

How nice it is to simplify things so much in order to denigrate.

You know very well that BT ADSL is miles different from ADSL2 .. as someone has already said the comparison is like having an dial up modem in the old days and the start of Broadband. And that is the same for the Max lines whoever provides it line conditions always apply but why let a few facts get in the way of a dig at Plusnet?

My download speeds with plusnet average 600k and is dependent on congestion in the local exchange and the same applies to other providers.

Lets face it you dislike Plusnet for whatever reason is stuck in your head and it shows in your postings.

I don't think he is denigrating, just stating facts, one of which is that Plusnet are open and honest about their throttling.

If you go back to the OP - "BT seem to have got broadband fundamentally wrong if such throttling has become the norm. I know now that I will never go back to a BT based broadband service."

I have already pointed out that the such throttling is not the norm. However the throttling which is applied by Plusnet is quite independent of exchange congestion, and is emphatically not the same for all BT ADSL Max providers.

It isn't Pod who is demonstrating a dislike of Plusnet, it is you demonstrating an unwarranted belief in Plusnet and acceptance of their strange belief that publicising your inadequacies makes them acceptable. The service may suit you, and many others. I occasionally recommend it on these forums. But for many others the actual service provided is far inferior to the other ISPs I have already listed.

To deliberately restrict someone's download speed of any kind of traffic to 50kbps or even 256kbps at any time on the grounds they are only paying for a low GB allowance package is ridiculous. Again, the listed ISPs do not do this. I for one can vouch for Newnet Lite 3GB package always supplying 70%-90% of profile except when there are actual faults somewhere. Barring the Olympics when 40% occurred frequently - far better than all the reports elsewhere of under 1Mbps.

I use the service and I am telling you what it is like .. so why shouldn't I tell you but then it doesnt fit the profile you want to portray.

"I for one can vouch for Newnet Lite 3GB package always supplying 70%-90% of profile except when there are actual faults somewhere. "

How do you know they don't manage their traffic? Oh I know ...you want to believe what you want to believe because they tell you that its so.

I was objecting mainly to your "denigration" of Pod on no grounds whatsoever judging by the post he made. I myself pointed out that the service is fine for some, I do not dispute that you are happy.

I do dispute that the ADSL Max experience enjoyed by customers of other ISPs is no better than that of Plusnet customers, and that the throttling applied by Plusnet is common to all ADSL Max ISPs.

I do not have a "profile" of Plusnet I wish to portray. I just like facts and objectivity to play some part in debates, not personal snidey remarks.

Re your Newnet comments how many months BT and TBB speed test results would you like? I'm afraid I do not have records of actual download speeds from various sites, but assure you they were not traffic-shaped. I also think I am probably wordly-wise enough not to accept ISPs' marketing blurb at face value - in particular Newnet's denial of throttling or shaping. In my experience the claim was substantiated.

You however seem convinced by Plusnet's reasons for the throttling and shaping they use. I suggest another reason - low investment in infrastructure! The benefit to their customers is low price. Fair enough, I have no quibble with that.

Nice reply .

As only two others mentioned problems and one of those was 87% of his normal speed I think we can discount throttling and shaping and assume one or more specific incidents/problems somewhere.

Even the OP of that thread, if you work out what he is saying in terms of units, was getting 180-240kbps instead of his normal 1200-1440kbps on a 2Mbps connection. Somewhat better than an intentional 50kbps, or even regular drops to 256kbps or 512kbps by ISP design.

Food then dog-walking time .
