Re: Sync speed stuck at 576k - noise margin 28db

[re: mikethemage] [link to this post]

Well I'm possibly being very slightly impatient given that this has been placed on hold until tomorrow morning, but I noticed my IP Profile has now risen from 500 to 5500. However I'm still connected at 576k:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 576 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 28.9 db 18.0 db

I've left a note on the ticket so hopefully when someone from plusnet goes to check it tomorrow morning, it'll either be fixed by then or if it's still broken it might give some clues as to why.... I hope.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether the DSLAM profile I think james mentioned earlier needed to be reset by BT is just another name for the IP Profile- as I assumed it must be something else, otherwise surely that wouldn't make sense- I thought the IP profile adjusted based on your current sync speed and if so surely manually setting it to 5500 is just going to cause it to drop back down to 500 based on the fact the sync speed is still stuck on 576?

Hiya,

The IP Profile is applied at the DSLAM, but the capping you had was something a bit different.

Have you tried rebooting since the profile changed? The 5500Kbps thing *is* an IP Profile. I reckon we're getting close to a fix.

Sorry I meant to say this is after having rebooted the router - I mentioned this on the ticket though...

Should I try again? edit: Ok nm I've rebooted it again but still no joy:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 576 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 28.8 db 15.0 db

OK.

Sounds like they've amended the IP Profile, but haven't lifted the capping on your line itself.

I'll try and get an update later on today for you.

Hi Mike,

I can see that your ticket has been updated this morning. From what I can see, we've requested that BT replace your line card, which may be the cause of your poor connection speeds. Hopefully we'll hear back within 24 hours.

What's telling you that you have a 5500 profile? As you say, that's impossible except occasionally for less than 75 minutes.

The only way of knowing your profile for certain is a BT speed test. Any profile shown in an ISP's control panel/user centre or whatever it is called is irrelevant if it is higher than the BT figure, and out-of-date if lower. (Which does happen as they rarely update in real-time at the ISP end. I only know of Plusnet and Entanet that have copies anyway).

How do I know the profile? from plusnet's site, followed by a BT speed test last night:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 576 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 288 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 464 kbps

Which I can't repeat right now as I'm at work. However plusnet have also put something on the ticket that looks like a report from their end also showing the sync rate as 5500 and the connection as 576.

Anyhow they reckon BT are going to change the line card at the exchange and that this should fix it... apparently...

edit: hehe we must be telepathic or something James

Mike,

I've just checked your line. Can you look again?

It might be a nice surprise
