Just signed up. Quick questions.

[link to this post]

After three years with AOL, the last of which has be very poor, I finally got my MAC and signed up with PlusNet this morning. I was pleased with the easy sign up service and already the member centre is giving me far more info than AOL ever did even though I'm not physically connected to them yet.

I have to say what impressed me most was the fact that I mentioned, in a blog post on my own site, a couple of weeks ago that I was trying to decide which ISP to move to. I listed Plusnet along with a couple of others. A Plusnet member of staff commented on the post and said to contact them if I needed any more details or info. That swayed my decision there and then.

I just have a couple of questions that someone here may be able to answer. Can anyone recommend a good download scheduler other than get right? I want to schedule downloads so that they only take place during the off peak midnight to 8am period.

Also, although it's more tech related. During the 'training period' with a new ISP, is it best to keep your router switched on constantly? I got a mixed response to this on another forum, and I know a lot of the users here have more tech knowledge, so I thought I'd ask.

I haven't used it for a while but I believe FreeDownloadMansger ([url=http://freedownloadmanager.org/index.htm]here[/url[) offers the facility to schedule downloads now. Best of all it is free (as suggested in its name).

Hi there,

Generally the concensus is that during the first ten days, it's advisable to reboot your router once a day.

I'm trying to remember whether it was your blog that I replied to or not

James, do you think it is really true that full re-training takes place on a Max to Max migration.

First is why would it be any use?
Second is if people have non-default target SNRM it never varies not even on the initial connection.
Third is I am fairly sure that recently after someone migrated they got lower syncs from day one and it was only after the 10 days were over they started asking questions. Their MSR and FTR turned out to be appropriate for the higher speeds they had been getting at their previous ISP.

I think the re-training on Max->Max is a complete myth going back to migrations from fixed speed to Max, and is perpetuated by false information from the BT staff that ISP support talk to. Probably not their fault, just faulty training and possibly documentation.

I am not aware of any user ever reporting a change of line behaviour typical of the 10-day training during a Max->Max migration. What does happen is that any problems are put off until after the 10 days, and then have to be corrected anyway as those days do not affect anything.

Bob,

I think you're right. However, I'm not sure whether the MSR/FTR is or isn't reset during a migration.

*James wanders over the faults desk*

*James wanders back*

Basically, I don't have anything concrete and I've never seen an MSR/FTR retrain from a migration (on other words, we've never seen a customer migrate in who *doesn't* have an MSR set.

So, in which case, it's probably best to just leave it plugged in and switched off.

Have a nice weekend

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure the name on the comment was a female one. Unless,of course, you have a secret identity !
