What does this mean pls?

[link to this post]

Hi All,

Just read this on Plusnet website: -

"Pay a one-off setup fee of £30 and have the freedom to leave Plusnet when you choose with 10 days' notice and no penalties.

If you need a router, you can also buy one from us for as little as £20.

Alternatively, take a 12 month contract and you'll only be charged for your setup and router if you leave within 12 months of signing up."

Does it mean if i go for one-month contract, then i will have to pay for the wireless router?

Also, i will only be charged for the setup and router if i leave within 12 months, so how much are we talking about here? is it actually better to sign up for 12 months then? as in i dont have to pay for the monthly costs to cover the 12 months if i leave beforehand?

many thanks

You've basically got it right.

If you have no intention of leaving in under 12 months then sign up for 12 months. If you leave earlier you just have to pay the costs you avoided at the start.

The only people who should pay up front are those who know they won't stay 12 months, and even that is daft as the money in the meantime is better in their bank than Plusnet's.

Maybe students sharing accomodation should pay up front. Saves anyone in the group refusing to pay up their share at the end of the academic year.

Thanks, i can take that going for one month means i pay up the costs now, while 12 months mean i can pay the costs later? that is, if i do leave within 12 months?

however, is that the only penalty for leaving before 12 months? or do i have to cover the monthly payment for the remaining months as well?

many thanks,

Just those costs. No minimum term. The 10-day notice means what it says. No payment for the outstanding months.

Ah, I haven't checked, there may be another charge called an ADSL Cease if you actually cancelled broadband instead of migrating out.

Migrating out should be free, (subject to the charges already discussed), though migrating to LLU may be a doubtful case.

or moving to LLU which also catches the charge as it doesn't need a MAC

That's what I mean by a doubtful case, that needs checking through Plusnet T & Cs or searching back to see if it has been covered.

A move to partial LLU (SMPF) such as O2/Be of C & W resellers does require a MAC.
A move to full LLU (FMPF) such as Sky (since not long ago) and TalkTalk is indeed done without a MAC.

However Entanet are claiming that even SMPF involves an ADSL cease as the line is moved from BTW equipment to the LLU supplier's DSLAM. So BT Wholesale ADSL is indeed ceased.

A grey area.

I agree that it is confusing. This seems to cover part of it.
http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/plusnet/t/3728549-r...
I think the basic principle is that there is a charge if Openreach charge which presumably is where they have to do some work. Hence going from IPstream to LLU needs jumpering changing at the exchange and therefor a charge.
However the part which is not clear is whether there is a charge on the losing ISP as well as the gaining ISP

The cease charge is only application when either broadband is ceased, or a move to a full LLU supplier (which includes a cease) occurs.
