[link to this post]

If I am out of contract on 14/12/09 and I intend to move to another ISP when should I start the ball rolling 14/11/09 or wait ruight until 14/12/2009?

Did you take a free modem or migration in? Other than deferred fees such as that ALL Plusnet contracts are 10 days since 22nd October.

No, I signed up for a £3 per month discount if I took on a new 12 month contract last December. Seemed like a good idea at the time! I have no other tie-ins.

I don't believe that the £3/ month discount is treated as a "Deferred" charge and therefore there will not be any clawback if you leave after giving 10 days notice.

Why are you leaving? Where are you going?

I'm not looking to clawback any money, I am (as usual) confused as to when to start the migration process - and precisely how it works, I am one of those people who prefer the simple life, I have thought of leaving several times but didn't fancy the hassle.

I was looking at the whole 21CN features and thought it looked good (I did think that PN were dragging their feet a bit) but my exchange is not yet upgraded - but lo and behold O2 are already offering it from my exchange andon their premium product I can get £75 back from quidco and the first 3 month free, works out at just over £1 a month for the first year for an upto 2Mbps 'unlimited' product - after which I might migrate back to PN - we'll see how good O2 are!

Have I replied to you anywhere recently?

O2 LLU is excellent but your "just over £1 a month for the first year for an upto 2Mbps 'unlimited' product" looks a bit strange. Is that a typo for "up to 24Mbps"?

Have a look at MKD's costs document for pukka stuff, but allowing for the typo and if you have an O2 mobile then you have it right.

Linky to the MAC process.

Note that Quidco retain the first £5 cashback per year but if you already use them that's fine. TopCashBack give you the full £75. I used Quidco when I joined, I don't think TCB were doing it at the time, and can vouch for Quidco reliability. Remember to clear cookies before going in to order.

If you have O2 LLU in your area then it is pretty well a no-brainer.

You should request your MAC about 20 days before the end of your payment month at PlusNet. PlusNet require you to do this by Phone but I would ALSO raise a ticket saying "Please take this as notice of my intent to migrate to another ISP. Please provide me with a MAC and on completion of my migtarion, please downgrade my account to a PayG Dial-up account and retain my Mailboxes."

PlusNet will want their retention team to speak to you before issuing a MAC.

Ten days before your PlusNet payment month end, sign up with O2 via quidco .... or better still, TopCashback.co.uk who don't deduct £5 per year.

O2's signup process is very slick and completes in about a week.

Thanks, that seems like a good explanation.

I already use both Quidco and Topcashback, for some reason I prefer Quidco, probably as they were my first cashback site (like PN are my first ISP!!!)

Sorry that was a type, it's not 2Mbps, for some reason O2 advertise it as an upto 20Mbps instead of 24.

The 20Mbps is marketing caution, presumably to reduce the complaint level as hardly anyone can get above that on any ADSL2+.

It isn't capped. If you are close enough to the exchange and the line and your wiring are good then 24Mbps is available.

I've done a few estimates and it looks like 16Mbps for me - but it is not all about speed, my current speed (around 6Mbps) is absolutely fine. After all the discounts have finished I should be on at least as good (and probably better) for about half price, with the ISP who comes top in several surveys. There has to be a down side but I haven't yet found it
