Line issue?

[link to this post]

A relative of mine has just signed up with PlusNet, and is relatively happy with the service, apart from the DSL seems to drop every few days.

His stats show some 42 error seconds in the last 2 days, and some 78 million FEC errors!

Full stats here:

Uptime: 2 days, 0:19:09
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,552
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/GB]: 0.00 / 5.32
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 51.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 16.0 / 5.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / P
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 42 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 51 / 78,435,050
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 51 / 754
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 39 / 590

So the question (as always) is, are these stats good? There is only 1 phone socket in the property, and the router is plugged directly into it.

Thanks

Alan

Assuming this is a first time ADSL installation it is still in the initial 10 day training period and it looks as though the line won't stand a default 6dB noise margin. The terrible weather may be having an effect - it is on my line.
It is probable that the default noise margin will increase to 9dB or even 12dB to stabilise the line which will drop the speed a bit

The error counts are absolutely fine for a 2 day uptime. You are looking quite stable, but the line is underperforming for an attenuation of 51.0dB and should be capable of nearer 5000kbps. Try connecting to the test socket if you have one to rule out any issues with your extension wiring.

They would need a very good line to get 5Mbps with 51dB atten. Mr Saffron's checker estimates 3.1Mb to 4.4Mb on that attenuation so the OPs current connection isn't bad.

I get over 6Mbps on 51dB. Until a recent pair swap between the cabinet and the exchange I consistently got 6700kbps, at 6dB target margin. Though as you say, it is/was a very clean line.

That's pretty impressive. My parents line is 44dB and with their line it isn't stable above about 4Mb - and even then it will occasionally drop back to 3Mb. The overhead line has never been all that great and about every 6 months it has to have sections replaced due to high winds and trees taking the line down.

New line from the pole to a new NTE5 a few years ago, no extensions.

Then a couple of years after that a cable break somewhere between the cabinet and exchange taking my neighbourhood out, necessitating 4 days of night-time digging up of the A6 and replacement cable.

'Twas near-perfect as I said. Then just before Christmas many people again started getting duff phone and very unstable net connections, but this time they seem to have managed with pair-swaps at the cabinet.

I lost (consistently) 700kbps the day mine was fixed frown. Que sera'.

As others have said, if you could try the router in the test socket and see if the connection is more stable from there it would help to diagnose the issue.
