Crossjumpered.. I think

[link to this post]

Dear all

Im looking for some advice diagnosing slow speeds on my Plusnet BB connection, I also believe (although I accept that I could be wrong) that I'm a victim of 'crossjumpering' at the exchange.

For the past couple of months my available download speed has been stuck at a max of 900k - 1000k when downloading. Plusnet have run all the usual tests from their end and cant see a problem as my line is showing as stable at 7150K according to their tests.

So I've gone through the process of getting all my end user equipment 100% fault free (or as near to as possible) I've replaced internal wires with BT spec cable, my router has changed from a netgear DG384g to a Billion 7800n, the microfilter and all other associated cablinbg has been replaced for new.

I still get the 900k-1000k speeds after all this.

Plusnet then ask me to carry out a speedcheck via the BT Speedtest website which I find that I cannot use. Each time I try I get a message saying that my phone number is not recognised.

I try a combination of the following to try and resolve my inability to carry out the speedtest.

a) The following browsers - Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer
b) An up to date Windows PC running Windows XP on a cabled connection
c) An up to date Apple Mac on a cabled connection
d) All Firewalls and security software switched off
e) with my phone number
f) with my service ID
g) with my phone number and service ID

All to no avail, heres where it get interesting....

Out of a combination of frustration and an attempt at logical problem solving I try doing a speedtest with a phone number one digit higher than my own, lo and behold the speed test runs, although it misses out the detailed information for the test.

I try running the BT speedtest for another couple of numbers I know that are BB enabled (parents, friends etc) they all work to the same degree as the test described above.

This gets reported to Plusnet who ask me to do a range of speedtests via other websites, taking screenshots to be mailed into them, I do this only to be told that I need to do a BT Speedtest (despite me already telling them that it cant be done with my number)

So I try the BT Speedtest again, this time using the phone number for my partners parents who are on the same exchange and are Plusnet users, I get to the next section that asks me for a username and domain name.
I input MY username and not my partners parents username and the speedtest runs as intended and shows my line profile as 7150... exactly the same as Plusnet's previous correspondence regarding my line speed.

In a nutshell,

1) My BB speed is stuck at 900-1000k max D/L, upload speeds are fine
2) My router syncs at 8128/448
3) All internal cabling has been replaced
4) All end user equipment has been replaced for new (router, filter etc)
5) I cant run the speedtest on my number but can run it on other numbers
6) I need to fing out definitely wether I'm a victim of 'cross jumpering' at the exchange

I'll accept that I could be barking up the wrong tree here, I'm just at the point of diminishing returns with regards to corresponding with Plusnet and would appreciate and tips on handling my problem

Many thanks

Keir

PS apologies for bad grammar, Im in a rush!

Hi Keir,

Thanks for the information! There's definitely some checks we can do, if you could PM me a username or ticket ID I can look at this for you.

Hi Keir,

Symptoms as described certainly match some of the things I noticed when my line was "cross-jumpered". Main symptoms were that I couldn't use the BT speedtest, and my line speed as reporeted by Plusnet bore no relation to what I was actually experiencing.

Having said that, I would be very surprised if the number you were cross-jumpered with turned out to be one away from your own. In my case, it was a completely different number.

I see Matt has already replied to you, and hopefully will get it sorted out. I had the same issue as you, initially, of having to explain that I couldn't do the speedtest, because part of the problem I'm reporting is: "I can't do the speedtest". Doh! Catch-22.
