21CN/ADSL2+ advice

Hi,

The other week I asked PN to upgrade me to 21CN/ADSL2+ and last Monday it was done (via a 21CN/ADSL1 move). So I was told to keep an eye on things for 10 days, which I guess for the exchange to figure out the best line speed etc.

Last week my router (Netgear DG834Gv4) was syncing at 11920/440, with the speed being about 5800kbps. Then last night I notice it had changed to 12466/444. Unfortuantely even though it was still synch'd I couldn't resolve anything. So I was in the process of moving to PN DNS servers (from OpenDNS) and then my router ADSL connection started bouncing like a yoyo:

I bit the bullet and rebooted the router, which gave me back a stable connection. It's now syncing at 12161/444 and a speedtest came in at 9638kbps. So all-in-all an improvement.

So I assume the strange happenings was the exchange trying to figure out the max speed I can run/sync at. The PN line tester thinks that my line is good for 13000kbps, so I figure there may be just a little bit more I can squeeze out of it. Given that I rebooted the router is this effectively going to stop the 10 day training or will it continue, or should I give PN a nudge to start another 10 day training?

Sounds more like the modem connected at a sync speed, that probably created too many errors, and modem got confused. The reboot sorted it out.

There is really no magic lets seek the highest speed you connect at, find it doesn't work and then back off.

The ADSL2+ modem will negotiate the best possible connection speed very time it reconnects. The limiter is target noise margin - which high error rates or lots of reconnects can cause to be altered. On very unstable lines banded profiles may be used, but generally these are applied at ISP request.

Not from the experience on the Plusnet forums it isn't. You would be amazed (or perhaps you wouldn't) at the number of complaints about banded profiles imposed by the automatic systems and worse still after they are removed at Plusnet request are fairly rapidly reimposed
