Whats the catch ??

[link to this post]

I am paying with Entanet at the moment, if I were to join Sky Max would I get a similar service ? The price just seems too good, at 10 a month, I am sure I am missing something. My exchange has standard ADSL up to 8mb. Does it need something else to be enabled on the exchange ?

What are the speeds like ?

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

I have Sky TV and Sky Talk.

Catches:

1) Sky need to have unbundled your exchange (check on samknows to see if Sky have "LLU'd" your exchange)
2) You need to have a sky TV contract
3) You need to have sky talk (or it will go up by 5 per month)

That's about it. Speeds can be very good - depending on the length of your line.

3) Isn't strictly accurate. I understood Sky Talk OR a TV HD subscription?.

Other caches that may or may not be important to the OP...
- you are required to use the router they provide. Although hacks are available to get the username/password to put into your own router you'll be breaching the T&Cs if you do this.
- 12 month contract, which ties you in to another 12 months of the TV service as well
- If you use Sky's SMTP server for outgoing mail it will always put your @sky.com address in the name, even if you specify your own domain name (though the folks at skyuser.co.uk have an smtp server that doesn't do this available for use).
- no static IP address option
- if they haven't unbundled your exchange you will get the Sky Connect package at 17 with a 40GB usage limit
- multi-tiered tech support can be a bit hit and miss

If none of the above is important it is probably a good move to make.

Steve

I think the TV subscription had to be in place by 24th Nov in order to qualify for the reduction.

Customers who take either Sky Broadband Max, Sky+HD or Sky Multiroom (or a combination of the 3) will automatically see their current broadband pricing frozen until January 2010, in recognition of their loyalty. This information should be going out in the letters from Sky informing it's broadband customers of the rises, sometime after 25th November. Only customers registered for either of those three services by Monday the 24th November 2008 will qualify for this price freeze.

Cheers, I knew I saw it mentioned somewhere. Must admit I wasn't aware of the November deadline.

Whilst it is true you have to have a Sky TV package to get the LLU prices, if you did cancel your TV side and are out of contract it would only be the balance of the broadband contract that would be due.

I thought I read somewhere in the T&Cs that you need to have a TV sub active for the duration of the minimum contract term if you take their broadband so that would commit you to another 12 months of the TV. That would make sense as the whole point of Sky Broadband is to reduce TV churn and attract new users to the TV service.
I'd check now myself but the Sky site is blocked here

the reason is, it isnt a standalone price.

its 10 on top of your current sky tv subscription, and soon you will need to have more sky bundled or another 5 will be on top.

The mistake many people make is they think its a standalone price.

If there is no LLU at exchange then its 17 not 10.
