BT O manage to screw things up again!

[link to this post]

So we order the full package from SKY on Dec 18th and have to wait till yesterday for the FTTC install.

Contractor turns up, fits faceplate and connects us to the cab, all seems OK and we have sync and connection to internet.

Phone line is dead and he says a framing engineer "should" do this later (isnt this his job?) He said the line was connected all the way back to the exchange so its an easy one for him!

24 hrs later, we have no phone line and no-one at SKY knows what's going on (there are no notes from BT).

They have nearly 8 weeks notice and still manage to leave us with no working phone line!

Tried to call SKY twice now from my mobile, just to get cut off mid call! (and at 40p/Min!)

Sky router just says 40M down and 10 Up.

Its a ECI modem so needs a little surgery to unlock!

The contractor didnt have the right gear to tell me the potential speeds of the line but I know its under 300M so should be good.

The missus has just realised we dont have any TV except freeview now too! Not happy!

Cant activate the Sky box as no phone line!

Virgin

they were aware of the change and released the number.

Looks like a physical problem with BT

Hi mate

have you tried your phone in the test socket, when i had my plusnet fibre installed the broadband was working but the phone was not, i took the faceplate off and tried in the test socket and both the phone and broadband was working fine, i tried that faceplate on my second phone line and it stopped that working so turned out to be a faulty brand new faceplate.

i now just have the BB plugged into its own port and the phone into the test socket permanently lol cant be bothered to replace the faceplate its worth a try at least

Not power cycled or anything.

Maybe BT are doing something that's affecting sync?

Yes! (but its Openreach, not "BT" which generally means retail).

Whatever you do don't touch the VDSL modem, don't power it off, don't unplug it from the phone socket etc. You can do what you like with the router.

The cabinet is likely doing some line testing and watching error stats to get you the best reliable sync. Its all automatic, and starts about a day after install I gather.

You don't need a phone line to activate a Sky box now. Our new box that was installed before Xmas has never been near a phone line and works perfectly. If you have issues, email Sky and ask for a call back. They will usually call within 24 hours and you can activate your box with them if it is a move.

Well, BTO finally closed the job down. Sky did a line test and surprise surprise there is a fault at the exchange.

Lets see how long this takes to resolve.

Not rebooted the modem at all, but looks like I have been DLM'd already.

well there is a chance it isnt DLM, your routing possibly may be changing between each recconect. But whatever is going on you getting excessive outages.

There isn't a 10 day training period for FTTC is there?

Sky keep going on about this and I think its just scripted [censored].

no thats their tech support been ill trained.

The line will initially sync as fast as it can on optimal settings. On day 2 DLM starts, if the line is stable enough then nothing changes, otherwise DLM will change the line configuration to improve stability, however it runs forever its not just for 10 days.

Yes thats what I thought.

Will the speed improve if a fault is cleared without anything being reset?

Tests looking good though.

That's from the sky hub, apparently this isn't quite true!

I'll give it a few days then unlock the modem to see what's really going on.

I've got a ECI modem, what have you got?

what isnt quite true?

sounds to me you are on the 40/10 product.

the sky hub does report the sync speed somehow it retrieves the information from somewhere (possibly from sky themselves).

If you are on 80/20 and as such dont believe you are on full speed then I think an error has been made in your order as your sync speed suggests you are on 40/10 and is full speed for that product.

I have got 2 ECI modems one of them is unlocked.
I also have a HG which is unlocked (this is what I got of the engineer).

That's from the sky hub, apparently this isn't quite true!

The sync speed the hub reports is the speed when the hub last booted up and doesn't change dynamically. To get the current speed you just need to power cycle the hub, just rebooting it from the web interface doesn't always update the speed.

Ah, OK, I read that the speeds displayed are the speeds for your package (40/10) etc.
The speeds come from Sky's systems as the modem is locked down.

My line should be good for 75/9.5 according to BT's checkers so I am probably at the max speed for my package anyway.

Ill probably go for the Pro package later, just wanted to see how this was first.

Don't think that a phone line has ever been required to activate. The phone was required to get the discounted Sky box otherwise cost more. Something to do with advertising. Not sure if it ever worked though.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1 & VM 2Mb
Now O2 standard
