Check your address in the Address checker http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.addres... to see what's available. You will need an engineer to install fibre.

Ouch. Does the results page just say you're connected to the exchange?

You need to use the Address (not Postcode) Checker as previously suggested.

Does it give a cab # like:
Address AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA on Exchange EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE is served by Cabinet 10
If not you are Exchange Only (EO) and they are not yet doing those.

That's no way of predicting the probability! I'm on 20/1 ADSL2+ speeds on a 2km line thro' that Cab 10 highlighted above.

A much better predictor would be whether OP has a v. low attenuation.

The usual assumption is that you should ask your Telco what they can do with your line, so you would need to call Sky who have access to this information.
That website only works for people using BTwholesale services.

Ah right. I think I had one of the fastest O2 provides - less than 3 days including router delivery.

smile

I think O2 was always interleaved, so that might have been the limit to 21/22meg. BE let you set fast path, but often it caused lots more disconnects. I remember my 6ms ping to the BBC before my line broke and was repaired. I used to get 18meg sync, then after that I got 16meg sync. I reckon just coincidence as lots of people probably signed up here when Sky broadband did a massive push (about same time).

well, i got a reply from sky - I have checked against your address and currently fibre is not available, although your exchange has been upgraded we are waiting for your local PCP to be upgraded. We currently have no time scales for this upgrade to happen.

i guess the PCP is the cab between me and the exchange?

Yes. That's the green box with the number on it, and you need a companion fibre box.

If however the fibre box is there, then you need Sky to have enabled it for their network (called a GEA Jumper Cable).

You need a BT line to get a proper accurate response. This is because BT is the only voice supplier (via BT wholesale) sharing the data on the internet.

Sky and TalkTalk you have to ask their customer services, they should have access to the same data, but they don't seem to know.

You could try the [email protected] email address, give them your full postal address including post code and telephone number

So if you use the BT checker with a near neighbours telephone number (someone in the same block of houses is ideal) and see what that says. If that gives you the CAB number you can see if that is the same as the CAB you believe you are connected to.

From the previous postings it seems to me that you used the "post code checker". This is notoriously unreliable. If you use the address checker and enter the post code in there along with the street name and house number it should be better.

nooooooooooo

got my reply from sky and i'm basically screwed. stuck with slow as much adsl2 frown

I have checked the data on your address and unfortunately no provider can offer you Fibre (FTTC).

This is due to the fact that the Fibre product Openreach is installing in the UK is primarily FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet).

This means that the equipment to provide your broadband is located in the street in a large green cabinet (PCP) You will see these dotted around normally.

Unfortunately you are actually one of the few customers who is that close to their exchange (0.9 miles by road according to Google maps) your line is not routed via a cabinet. Instead it goes straight to your house from the exchange. This is known as a direct exchange line.

Use the BT wholesale checker https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html and see of your line is connected via the exchange as per the sky email or via a green cabinet.

Use the number checker or the address checker as both of these show the FTTC status. If you get a message like:

Address {house no}, {town}, {postcode} on Exchange {your exchange} is served by Cabinet {number}

then you are in luck. If it sais something else then its normally an exchange line.

There have been others on this forum that have mentioned that BT are starting to install cabinets outside the exchange to work around this, but do not hold out any hope for now if that's the case..
