They don't tell you the broadband userid and password. you have to use an app to get them.

The password to access the hub is admin/sky

So its just plug it in and away you go then? Most routers i have owned which are mostly Netgear always require the ISP user name/password in the settings,i guess its preset then.

Any reason why they don't give you your username and password......

I think the main reason is so you can't use a different router.

All routers from major ISPs are plug and play nowadays. BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virginmedia. Plug em in and away you go.

Is the new Sky router dual band - if so about time?! They lost me as a customer over their terrible old hub.

it comes preconfigured for the authentication process, which is dhcp not the usual pppoe, so yeah just plug it in and it should go online by itself.

Yes, I had my own router. My setup was Sky Hub - Ethernet - Own router. Ultimately the Sky Hub kept falling over though, even with my own router it kept rebooting itself...

I have 30+ devices online in my house, it could not hack it.

I didn't want to mess around getting a router that supported fibre connection and MER, spending a fortune. HomeHub and virginmedia superhub handle it just fine.

Probably doesn't help that my house is always relatively warm.

I think I used the Sky Hub for about an hour before grabbing the credentials and setting up the HG612.

That didn't used to work on sky fibre as they had MER authentication which was not supported by most routers.

Can you elaborate - I would consider switching back in future (cheaper no doubt) if I could ditch the sky equipment easily eg with a hg612. Are they no longer using MER?

Not sure what you mean about "didn't used to work". It's always worked.

When Openreach did managed installs for Sky, you got an Openreach modem which you plugged the Sky router into. Since Sky started supplying the router with a built-in modem, you could still plug it into the Openreach modem instead.

If you want to use an unlocked HG612 as a modem/router, there is a way of making the MER connection by running a command to the HG612, but it's not persistent so you have to rerun it on a resync. http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/t/4466337-hua...

MER is just DHCP with a username/password in an optional field. Some other routers do support it. You can either extract or calculate the username/password combination. Have a search. Asus routers with merlin firmware for example. ADSL users on Sky get PPPoA still.

I see IPv6 working on my mates Sky ADSL last weekend.

The Sky Q router is dual band, with AC wireless and has homeplug built in so the main SkyQ box and the MiniQ boxes can communicate over homeplug, WiFi or ethernet connection - all built in. (no wonder they're so expensive).

Hello,

It all depends on the router, some firmware have MER available. If using ASUS for example if you use merlins firmware you can use MER authentication.

Not sure about Netgear however, perhaps if it supports 3rd party firmware like Shibby Tomato etc.

Thanks

The latest Netgear routers support sending DHCP identifier strings (options 60 and 61) over WAN, so they will support Sky fibre without installing third party firmware.

Around 2011/2012 when sky fibre was brand new, I was part of the fibre testing team... There was not a single router I could find that supported the MER out of the box which sky used apart from a Draytek which was a small fortune.

There were options such as DDWRT and I did use them for a while.

I guess significant advancements have been made since then which is brilliant. It's good to see this working out of the box now especially on netgear devices.

Finally - do all customers get the Q hub or just people subscribing to sky Q TV?

OpenReach no longer issue modems, and shortly will no longer support - Andrew had an article about it on the main site last week. Sky have been doing all-in-one modem/router for VDSL since the second iteration of the Sky hub.

It works i am the live example.

I am using a billion 8800nl in bridge mode as my modem (a hg612 would work also) and a asus ac68 as my router. My sky hub arrived before activation and I had the auth info ready to paste into my asus on the activation day.

I didnt even use the skyhub for 1 minute on the service, I had obtained the auth info from the device prior to the activation date.

well I have no tv other than freesat so I only pay sky for broadband (and the required voice line).

SkyQ if it can accept a network input I assume will work just fine, but if it only works when its actually used as the router then that could be a problem yes.

I believe if you use the new SkyQ hub (ISP router) then the homeplug and distributed WiFi AP support in the other Q boxes is activated. If you use any other router, the SkyQ boxes are just clients on either ethernet or WiFi networks, and the homeplug isn't.

That's how I understood the FAQs.

I think there is a way for these to work as a normal network client, because sky will have tv customers who are not sky broadband customers. Enforcing their broadband service for this would limit their potential sales.

Agreed, as I said in my post you replied to: "If you use any other router, the SkyQ boxes are just clients on either ethernet or WiFi networks, and the homeplug isn't used"

I know of people who prefer Sky TV but have Virgin Media broadband for example.

Sky must be extremely worried about the future of their consumer broadcasting. Various forms of streaming such as Netflix etc are starting to make inroads and if these new "Kodi boxes" hitting the market for under £60 are anything to go by, that future certainly isn't rosy.

Got a function?

the problem sky have is they dont have the saturday 3pm games, so joe bloggs searches for a way to watch a nbc stream, then they discover these streams also work for sky's live games so evaluate why they paying for sky.

So for that either sky need to start getting the sat 3pm games or the EPL need to stop selling worldwide rights to those games, but regardless this is off topic.

It's not a matter of Sky (or BT Sport or whoever) "getting" the 3pm games.

The FA, Premier League and Football League don't want live football shown between 2:45 and 5:15 on a Saturday (in the UK) as, based on some outdated and unproven 1960's thinking, they believe it will affect attendance at matches.

Until those bodies change their thinking and allow the broadcasters to show matches in that time period, there is nothing Sky or anyone else can do about it.

Then us Joe bloggs find we need pay nothing to watch absolutely everything, which is more than those that pay can watch. I am one of those that consider all online free for the taking, and doing so is committing no crime. Sorry for being Off Topic, but I think Sky's days via satellite are well and truly numbered and may be off topic altogether in a few years.
