New Sky Max Connection - v low speeds

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I've just had a Sky Max installed and I'm only getting about 400kbps download and 600kbps upload. I've found the following information from the modem setup page and I'm a bit confused:

Connection Speed 4638 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.5 db 26.0 db
Noise Margin 12.2 db 12.5 db

Howe come I can't get these speeds when I run the speed test on this page? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for any help

Where are you testing the download speeds?

Bulldog Unlimited Plus
Best Speedtest
Average Sync 9000/1000Kbps, 38.5dB Attenuation

Sky Broadband Max
Average Sync 9000/764Kbps, 44.5dB Attenuation

I've run the thinkbroadband test here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117499511956285515510.html

Am I correct in thinking that the reults from the the netgear modem diagnostics show the sepped my line is capable of, rather than the speed it is receiving?

Also, I remember hearing something about a 10 day period where BT or whoever test the line capabilities?

What do you think?

Thanks

Try the tester at http://speedtester.bt.com

This will tell you the current data rate for the line. BT have a capped data rate for a line that increases if the line is stable at a particular sync rate. If the data rate is low then it may explain your speed problems.

If you're on Sky Max then you're on Easynet's LLU hardware, not BT's DSL Max. Which means there is no IP profile set for the line, it *should* just run as fast as it possibly can. Do downloads from other websites confirm the speeds you're seeing on thinkbroadband?

Hmm, I am getting the following error from http://speedtester.bt.com:

Unexpected result received when querying the network to find your services connection details. Please try again shortly

Perhaps this is because Sky use Easynet as stated above.

20 meg download from apple.com seems to satble out at about 103kb/sec.

Still confused as to why this differs from the netgear diagnostics? Sky's fault or is there nothing I can do about it.

Thanks for your help.

Yep that's because you're on Easynet LLU. Try downloading from ftp.mirror.ac.uk - try ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/fedora.redhat.com/6/i386/iso/FC-6-i386-disc1.iso

Let us know how it goes.
