weird FUP?

[link to this post]

hi friends
i am looking to join sky broadband whose package looks quite interesting, but i am concerned about their FUP.

ive read FUPs of many other ISPs but they are different to sky. sky seem to be placing too much emphasis on users not downloading "large files" using peer-to-peer.
are they really very concerned about that?

i am on occasional downloader and my downloading pattern varies, it might be 50gb 1 month but 10 gb another. should i be too worried about signing up with Sky?

also, toucan have reportedly improved their service. does anyone have any thoughts on that?

thanks for your help

You're reading the FUP wrong. It's just an example about downloading showing those people who won't be affected.

"Our FUP normally has little or no effect on the average broadband user. For example, if you do not excessively use file sharing software (including peer-to-peer) or regularly download very large files, you will most probably never be affected by the policy."

Sky have not enforced any FUP in 12 months, just don't take the mickey and they won't need to

Assuming you're talking about Sky Max, I don't think 50GB a month will be a problem.

What would be regarded as "taking the mickey"?

But isn't this figure just speculation?

My understanding is that Sky have never given a ball park figure and nobody to anyones' knowledge has been jumped on by sky for exceeding what they regard as acceptable.

Correct 250gb is a figure banded about unofficially , but there is no record of been jumped on knowing how useless sky are I doubt they can be bothered.

It amazes me how well the speeds do hold up I have not seen any issues (real issues) speed wise since joining in Feb this year, and with no usage checks been made (or records of) and more people joining daily there must come a limit, and if sky (easynet) can do it how come the others struggle so much.

Money (bandwidth) is the key I guess that and not using BT VPs.

I would personnally like it if people left their linux distros until after midnight. However what I want and what I get are 2 different things.

The unofficial figure is 250gb (on MAX) per month and there have been NO reports of any action after this amount has been exceeded. afaik Sky have more than enough capacity on their LLU products and tbh it looks like they aint bothered.

I suspect they may want to get a certain amount of subscribers tied to a 12 month contract before enforcing any rules.
