my son has sky bb and frequently finds it disconnects when keyboard inactive breaking downloads. Is there a known issue with sky doing this?

Unlikely to be anything to do with Sky.
Apart from those using a rubbish old USB modem (which would be PC powered, and could go off when the PC falls asleep - if the PC power settings are configured that way).
If your son is using the Sky supplied ADSL router, there's no way it will be dropping the connection when he doesn't touch the PC keyboard.
I suggest he looks at his PC power settings - IIRC there's one to switch off the network, when the PC goes to sleep, and the "sleep" mode can be set to trigger after quite a short period of inactivity.

EDIT: Either that, or Windoze has a problem, or he's picked up some sort of virus.
