Gaming NAT question

Hi all,

Quick question to you all, I'm going live with sky on the 29th of this month on the MAX LLU service, and am asking if there is anyone out there using more than one xbox 360 for online gaming, as we intend to use 2 xbox 360's, one via wireless, one via the netgear mains connector that transmits the ADSL signal from the router to the other 360 upstairs, and lastly, a PS3 downstairs near where the tv and sagem router are.

The PS3 will be connected via ethernet cable direct to the router.

At the moment, I'm using this settup with BT home hub, on a 2 meg service and paying £24.95 per month, with no NAT problems, but did get NAT issues on previous providers, so want to ensure I can get online with all my gear (xbox's are my sons, PS3 is mine) without any issues?

I do get a Moderate NAT from XBox 360 when using the Sky DG834GT, which can (and does) cause problems on XBox Live. I can get that NAT to show Open if I put my XBox 360 in the DMZ, which is what I do.

You can't do that for more than one device of course so the two 360s might well be a problem.

Do Sky still do the DG834GT for new installs or have they moved on? I suspect that whether or not this works for people in general is more down to the capabilities of the router than anything else.

Thanks Gary, Sky have supplied me with a sagem router, so unsure yet of how good or bad this will be in regards to this NAT question.

Daft as it sounds the BT black hub 2 I use now is OK, but am changing purely for cost reasons, fingers crossed I'm not making any mistakes.

If you have uPNP enabled on the router, the PS3 will detect this and use it if it needs to. I believe the XBox is the same.

UPNP lets the console change port forwarding as it needs to, so that voice-chat, and video type features work.

That's true, but I recall UPnP problems with the DG834GT firmware, things weren't quite right. Can't remember the exact issue though.

Perhaps worth checking for upgrades, or replacing with a decent router ?

(sorry, I'm not a fan of netgear routers)

Glad to report everything working 100% OK.

Using supplied Sky Sagem router, got main xbox red elite (got rid of PS3) downstairs under HD tv working via ethernet, sons white xbox upstairs connected via netgear mains router kit, and third xbox again upstairs in other sons room connected via microsofts own 360 wireless adaptor, with no NAT issiues whatsoever.

we have also got the main PC working wireless upstairs, and the iphone via wi-fi on the sky router, so a very good start to sky max.

We have the Sagem Fast 2504 here.

It seems two nights ago, on Sunday, there was Firmware update.

At least the symptoms appeared the same in that the Modem lost the internet eventually but not before it had stopped the Video chat I was doing in iChat and signed me out of AIM.
(Last time I jumped in to Reboot the Modem and Sky said it was Dead and replaced it)

My Son was On line in a game on his X-Box 360 and he lost contact with the game and could not get back to it.

He gave up for the evening.

Today he can not fully get into Games.
He can apparently Login but has trouble joining games or having other people join if he Hosts.

Have checked the Pages and nothing appears to have changed in the Router part of the settings.
It Remains doing Static Routing to 2 Macs, 2 X Boxes, 3 PC Towers and a NoteBook with a reduced DHCP Range of 2 IPs above the Static IPs for my son's Phone.

The X-Box continues to give this "Moderate NAT" message which My son feels is the issue.
There seems to be no way to change how the Modem does NAT.

Does anyone know if possibly Open DNS may help this ?
Are there other tweaks in the settings that can help ? (Bearing in mind the settings above)

Why don't they do these updates when no -one is likely to be On-line ?
