Sky "expert" engineers??

[link to this post]

I came home the other day to find my rock solid connection had been dropped for the previous 8 hours. The router was gaining sync and authenticating for about 5 seconds and then trying to reconnect. The cycle continued until I got home where I immediately shut the router down, removed the filtered faceplate and plugged into the test socket. Still had the same problems, so tried a new phone cable, same issue. I managed to get a wifi connection to the router on one of the occasions it stayed alive for a few seconds longer. I thought I would give it a miss before DLM hammered the line too much and rang Sky to report the fault. After jumping through the many hoops they give you, I managed to speak to someone and explain the predicament. They allegedly tested the line and said there were no problems, so they would send out one of the "experts", not BT. Next morning I re-connected the phone cable and the router gained sync. It was up for an hour before I left for work and was synced at 52mb down, 12mb up, 3.8db, DLM hadn't taken too much of a kicking luckily. I tried to contact Sky again to cancel the appointment, but couldn't get through. The "expert" turned up (Sky or Kelly? Don't know as was at work and wife saw him), saw the notes I had left with current sync, noise margin. He said I had an old faceplate and replaced it with a new. He also said there was a fault at the cabinet and that BT would be there in a day or so and left. Result? 38mb sync down, 6mb up and 8.2db!!! Great repair!!! I can only hope that over the next few days some sort of stability improves my gisures and allows me to move up the speed tables again.

So almost a week after the visit, my speeds seem to be capped and am unable to get hold of Sky. The "expert" also took my filter away with him, so I can't remove the faceplate and plug in to the test socket to see if it is the new faceplate causing the issues. Not overly impressed at the moment frown

Got myself a new filter today and have plugged to the new socket. I see even the backplate was changed, wonder if it's some dodgy wiring to the terminals? Anyhow, rebooting hasn't helped, SNR now up to 9db.

Connection Speed (Kbps) 39994 7200
Line Attenuation (dB) DS1:14.1 DS2:33.7 DS3:52.6 US0:2.5 US1:25.2 US2:41.4
Noise Margin (dB) DS1:9.7 DS2:9.6 DS3:9.7 US0:10.0 US1:8.4 US2:6.8

Figures before the fix were:

Connection Speed (Kbps) 52112 10099
Line Attenuation (dB) DS1:14.2 DS2:33.9 DS3:52.8 US0:2.5 US1:25.5 US2:41.6
Noise Margin (dB) DS1:5.3 DS2:5.1 DS3:5.1 US0:6.0 US1:5.3 US2:6.0

Can't pretend to understand what they all mean, but I know some of them aren't good frown Struggling to get any sense out of Sky now.

39994 suggests banding at 40Mbps.
Hopefully it's temporary.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully, but it has been a week so far and the daily disconnects (used to manually re- sync after 40 - 50 days previously) and the 3db SNR increase tells me I think they may be a bit more permanent frown

Why are you disconnecting daily? Just leave it alone.

Can you tell my router that please? It is the router re syncing every day, not me.

To bring this to an end, I had another Sky expert out today and was here to speak with him. He listened, understood and acted. He checked the NTE5C that had been fitted and found a crushed cable where it had been screwed back onto the backing plate. He stripped the cable and re- made it. Some router checks were made and he even went back to the bridge tap that had been gelled by a Openreach engineer a few years back to check it. When he rang, as suspected, the line had been banded and DLM was reset. Sync and throughput have now returned, normal service has been resumed smile

A very helpful expert and was going to run an ethernet cable from router to Sky box, but I decided to leave it wireless for the time being, it is something I may consider in the future and turn off the Sky box wifi.

Thank you Yuri.
