Thinking of changing to TT

[link to this post]

I am thinking of changing to TT, really as a means of saving some money.

Currently I am on a LLU CPW line - is that straightforward to change to TT?

They seem to only offer two options at the moment - Essentials or Plus TV. What I would like is Broadband with Anytime Calls. Not interested in the TV option.

Any advice please

CPW is usually taken to mean Carphone Warehouse who is TalkTalk, or do you mean Cable and Wireless?

There is an Anytime call boost for Essentials @ £5 per month, which would bring the Essentials monthly cost to £11.50 per month (excluding current discounts and line rental). This would save you a little compared to Plus TV (you would save £6.25 per month for the first 9 months and £3.00 thereafter).

If you already get a reliable download speed then Talk Talk should be OK.

The trouble starts with them if you have to use their "Customer Services" Phoneline.

They also have a habit of sending Telephone Line Engineers out for a Broadband problem. Apparently a Broadband Engineer costs them money and they do not like that!

Thank you All for the replies.

I have read all the history with them and peoples opinion is very mixed. At the moment I am just weighing up the pros and cons.

I suspect you will have problems migrating from a cpw llu line to talktalk llu as it would be an internal migration and that generally wont work.

Odd, carphone warehouse is talktalk so you've basically already got a talktalk line.

If OP were to tell us his ISP we could work if he really means C&W.

It is all a punt. I have used a few ISP's and to be fare I have been lucky. They were all good on my line. I just had one of my routers, which although feature rich, was a bit problematic on the line. A £35 basic one cured that. I am now on SKY, first ADSL and now FTTC.

I would recommend you to go with whatever fits your cost & download capacity profile.

I am just having a good look around before I make any changes. I read various reports that imply you can migrate from CPW to TT and others that you can't.

In the light of your replies I have been having a good look around and monitoring the TT forum. All of which leaves me less than impressed.

It would seem that any contact on the forum you will have to wait at least 2 days, longer if you try on a Thursday or later. The first reply is of little use whilst they request more info and wait another 1,2,3 days and so on. This is acceptable for non urgent problems but what happens if you lose your line. No mobile here or close neighbours. From what I have read you can reckon on weeks being without a line.

I have lost my line twice during the last few years and have had it back within a few days due to an ISP that you can actually speak to.

So I think I can put my idea of saving a bit out of my head for present. TT really need to clean up their act and actually show they care about their customers.

Another thing that annoys me on the TT forum is the OCE's avatars - implies it is all a big joke instead of applying themselves to seriously dealing with peoples problems.

I would also like to know the outcome of the poster Devonian's debt of £500 - seems on the TT forum that that was buried. Having been a TT user some years ago I can see that coming to light, not that I left them owing anything - not that I am going there.

As in lost connection which should only take a few hours, or as in lost the phone line which could take ages?

Its good you have done your home work on TalkTalk and are making a balanced decision , if you need good support , do not come to TalkTalk but if you need to save money above all else there are no cheaper options for fixed line broadband .

If you are aggressive and abusive on the members forum , expect your post to get buried .. I have always found being polite works much better when communicating over the internet IMHO .

I have a 3g signal here and is why losing my broadband is not the end of the world and hence why i'm happy saving money whilst sacrificing fault resolution times that i may never have to find out about .( that's the gamble ) but in 6 years of saving money with no faults my gamble paid off .

Edit: apart from Sky free broadband that is not actually free as you have to subscribe to there very expensive satellite service . Stil leaves TalkTalk essential LLU the cheapest .

I have been with AOL UK Silver Service for about 5 years (when AOL was still AOL!) and am just transferring to TT with the YouView deal. Until a year ago I could only get 750 - 1.2 meg as it is a rural exchange but thanks to LLU (and Mr Saffron!) I now get 3.5 - 4meg.

The service is ok. It does drop out once or twice a day but to be honest I am not sure if that is TT or my Vodafone fenmtocell box that is the issue and it generally comes back within a couple of minutes. Come to think of it it hasn't happened when watching iplayer through the wii so it is probably the Vodafone box!

I have not needed to call support for several years and being on aol uk and not tt I don't have access to the forum. My only problem in the last 5 years was to do with phone wiring and very kindly resolved by Mr Saffron who more than trebled my speed for me smile

Anyways... if you will need little in the way of customer support and money is an issue than TT is ok.

Of course ........ If I want LLU speed Which is almost double non LLU speed then my choice is TT or Sky ... If that changes I may think differently!

Sky's "free" broadband comes with a 2Gb quota too, so I guess most people will be paying the extra subscription fee for the unlimited service anyway.

One was a lightning strike nearby and blew the socket of the wall as shrapnel. The other was BT half a mile away playing with connections and took my line out - though he denied it when challenged.

Plusnet is 1p cheaper at £6.49 smile

Admittedly it's only unlimited overnight, but unlike Talktalk they don't force you to take their line rental.

I have lost my line twice during the last few years

I have been a TT customer for 3+ years and in that time i have had hardly any problems and have never lost phone or BB for any length of time.

At midnight on Wednesday my ADSL light on the modem turned red and after rebooting i noticed i also had no dial tone.

I used my mobile to go to the help site where i put my mobile number and account number in the spaces provided and ticked "no BB" and "no phone" i immediately received a text telling me i would hear something in the next 3 hours, when i got up at 7 a.m the next morning i found everything working and at 08:30 i received two a texts the first telling me an engineer was on the case and the second that he had found a fault and it was now fixed, a few hours later i got another asking me to text either "fixed" or "not fixed" back to them,
Phone support may not be the best but my first proper test of customer care was not the nightmare i was expecting.

Used to troubleshoot a customers broadband which often involved phoning the call centre. (He hated doing it, heavy Scottish accent and potential indian call centre it never worked well)

He was originally with tiscali who had THE WORST customer support I've ever come across, but when I phoned up after they were bought by talk talk it was pretty easy going. Explained the fault to the guy, we did the usual 5 step question, I explained what I thought the fault was he consulted his manager who agreed and 1 day later we had a brand new router with some new micro filters and all was well. Rather painless

I often wonder when i read replies to threads about TT phone support in forums like this how many of the people posting have actually had a bad experience with phone support in the recent past, we have had more than our fair share of forum members here who still put down phone support even though they haven't been TT customers for years, i guess haters love to hate.

talk talk offer terrible speed, terrible service, and fob you off and blame it on you all the time, but if you enjoy talking to call centres in central dubai then they are a wonderful choice.

my current speed on a promised 8mps is 0.15mps, unless I go on after midnight when i sometimes get a faster speed

I leave them in 3 weeks and it will be the best thing I have ever done, I doubt you will ever find a more useless broadband provider than talk talk

I beg to differ, i have been a TT customer for over three years and in that time have only had two minor issues which were rectified in an acceptable period of time.
