I have just signed up for Talk Talk fast broadband with a 18 month contract, the guy on the phone said the maximum is 17Mbps and i was getting a steady 10 to 11 Mbps, since signing up my speeds have jumped to 14Mbps, is this a coincidence?

Were you on an ADSL 2+ based service before? It's sometimes normal to get a bit faster on TalkTalk's network which will probably be LLU.Years ago when I was with BeThere I could only get 8 on BT but I got 12mbps on their LLU network

Thanks, I am on the same package (as far as i know) that i was before (see below) i haven't a clue if it is/was ADSL 2+ all i know is the speed seems to have jumped since signing up for the extra 12 months.

Need to see the ADSL2+ line stats, connection speed attenuation and noise margin.
It may be TalkTalk has adopted a 6dB default noise margin compared to the 9dB or sometimes 12dB that people saw previously. The lower noise margin allows for a little more download speed, with the slightly increased risk of resyncs.

Thanks MrS, i am happy with the increase so wont bore you all with the stats (even if i could find them) i will keep an eye on it and see if it drops back in the future.

If you are on LLU that also a bonus as TT can control the line with near instant results for the above (unless there are plenty of commands being sent, which in 2016 would be unlikely as more people are on FTTC.

Thanks 23Prince, i was thinking of going for fibre but i have been told page loading times would not change significantly so i may just stay put and save the connection fee, i imagine eventually they will put all customers on fibre free of charge as they have nothing else to tempt customers away from other suppliers.

No probs fella
Yes you are more than likely on Talk Talk LLU which, in my experience anyway has always given me more speed than ADSL Wholesale connections (LLU in general, not Talk Talk's)
I am on Talk Talk Business fibre and apart from the connection fee (£50 for a migration or a new line) I use more in a month with phone calls and Data usage than the £31.95 commands from me.
So it's a win win.
There are many people who will connect you for free now and offer a price the same as if not better than LLU.
But if you don't need the faster speed why worry? There are some places like Sky who will also use LLU and will do the broadband for free (as long as you pay line rental) , so the way I see it - as an ADSL customer on LLU or otherwise you are in a good position to get repeated good/free deals.

Thanks again, i have recently signed an 18 month contract with TT so cannot move, having said that i have been with them donkeys years and apart from a few screw ups with direct debit payments have had no problems whatsoever, i do not think i would move unless the offer to migrate was too good to turn down.

No probs
As a current customer also I can only agree with you

That is not something you read every day.
I used to be a member here a while ago and if you put TalkTalk and good service in the same sentence in a post you would have several replies withing minutes suggesting you had lost the plot, have TT got better or have people got sick of moaning about them in places like this?

I'm on Talk Talk Business so that's the only experience I can draw from.

I am a long term poster here. Nothing bad to say about the actual connection I have with TT, it works flawless 24/7. I am a standard residential customer and I must say the customer service is the worst I have encountered to date but not much worse than BTs CS. Overall very happy with my talktalk service, certainly there is no traffic management, full speeds 24/7 and a very very reasonable price. As long as you understand CS is poor and are prepared to deal with it you'll be ok.

£27 a month is a good deal. If I see it right you get set to the max and then you can boost to that max for £5 a month and then remove it when you wish. Handy, and I guess one of the more direct benefits of owning and controlling your own network.
When you add all the extras it's not far off the business offering after the initial 12 months. I can only say what their CS is like but for me it's worth paying the extra. Ex vat prices obviously.

I actually pay 17.70 in total
Hows TT business CS? Any good experiences to share?

When we had to speak to CS they were very helpful, this was about payments not connection problems, i have read horror stories about customers experience with Customer support but i do wonder for every unhappy customer venting in forums like this how many happy ones are there that never post.

Yes, when someone posts of their issues, it would be inappropriate for me to quickly post and say my service is perfect. So these kinds of forums do attract the negative comments.
That said we cannot ignore that talktalk are one of the most complained about ISPs.

TT have definitely got a bad reputation when it comes to CS and as the old saying goes "there's no smoke without fire" but as you say it is not the only ISP with unhappy customers, i am just glad i have never had to find out for myself how bad/good they are.

I've called them twice and both times I've got through to Warrington and sorted within minutes. o far so good!

I have first hand experience of 3 hour telephone calls with not a single person being able to help, repeatedly being fobbed off and given incorrect information. Ultimately, I got things resolved, but it definitely is a pain.
I also have examples where things went very well e.g. my initial installation left me without any service. Reported no service fault at 8pm (first day of joining TT). Got SMS texts up to 11pm. Next morning around 10am SMS telling me fault fixed and service was live.
If you choose the cheapest provider you have to know what you're getting into. It is a roulette what service you get

TalkTalk CS is useless. On the rare occasion I speak to them, I then contact the CEO's office when they make simple mistakes because it's off script.
However I'm soon to pay £32 for 80/20 for 18 months, so can't complain.

I've been with TalkTalk for almost 10 years on their up-to 20MBPs service and it has generally been very reliable offering good stable connections and download speeds.
I have only had to call Customer Services once and they quickly diagnosed a faulty router saying they would send out an engineer to replace He duly arrived the next day and fitted a new router He also put a wireless dongle on my Sky box so it could connect to the internet.
If I have any minor problems or questions I use the very helpful community support forums.
