I have had my modem powered from an auto extension lead that drops power to all peripherals when the computer is switched off.
For the past couple of days, when I power on, the modem powers on but I get no connection to broadband and have to go through the Connect & go palaver (which doesn't work properly) to get connected. I have since moved it to its own, permanently on supply, and it works OK. If it does get switched off, then I have to go the whole damn thing again ..
Is it a modem problem, or something else ..
Any ideas?

sounds like a issue with your power saving device, if the modem connects when it has its own power then that proves the modem/router is working fine.

Sounds like there is a COMMIT SETTING button that needs to be pressed, or a save all in the modems configuration software.
Exactly what modem is it?

The Modem is the MT882 supplied by Talktalk ..
It was no problem until 3 or 4 days ago, then suddenly the only lights showing were power and USB .. running Connect & go eventually got it going .. but after I had powered off it wouldnt start the next time .. eventually I tried plugging its supply directly to the mains , then, provided I dont turn off the mains it keeps going, but if I do, I have to go through Connect & go again .. usually more than once
have removed and replaced all the connections to try to improve possible dodgy contacts .. all to no avail

I suspect your ethernet network is not starting up properly. Do you know about setting up DHCP etc? Basically you want the router to supply the network addresses for the PC. It should be the DHCP server and the PC should have no address set but receive the allocated one from the router.

Some computers network cards do not like coming out of hibernate mode, and some laptops power off the network card when running on batteries, which can be annoying when the power lead falls out but you don't notice.
The suggestion of looking at the computer end does seem reasonable.

Sorry I have not replied before ..
Have been away for a week or so, and when I came back I found my Tivo (PVR) hadn't been connecting to tivo computer for its daily update of forthcoming programmes
have been totally occupied with trying to sort it out since then ..
Now talktalk are telling me that because I am on an LLU connection, dial up is not supported .. it worked fine for 18 months .. apparently it shouldn't have done ????
Anyway, for the moment any other problems have been put on the back burner with the gas on very low
thanks for all you help & comments

Dial up does work on LLU; you can have a broadband and a dial up connection to different ISPs at the same time.
I don't know how the Tivo works but if it is like a Sky box, it needs its own filter.

Yes .. seems I was given duff gen about the LLU ..
regarding having its own filter .. I have had it connected with the filter in the master socket (test socket ) and nothing else connected (not even the broadband modem/router ..
still usually fails .. very occasionally connects .. normally says 'no reply''
have also monitored with an phone (I know that can upset things) and there does sound to be data but don't know whether up/down/both.;
Though I would like a 'fix', for the moment I'll put up with working occasionally.. but am thinking of modifying it to attach to a network .. apparently much more satisfactory, but a bit complicated and expensive ..
A number of folk have the same problem, since about the same time, on either talktalk or tiscali , so doubt that it is my tivo box or telephone line, but can't think what else it could be

If Talk Talk has broken dial-up then only a matter of time before lots of Sky satellite customers get big bills....i.e. not a wise move on their part.
Will start asking away
