OCE Fibre Clueless

[link to this post]

Anyone with TT care to comment on this thread - http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/showthread.php... , specifically "....your current speeds are not high enough to make you eligable for the fibre service (you have to be able to acheive speeds of 15 meg or over)"
Utter tosh, so much for the much praised forum support.

The person who responded is the website designer, possibly because all the others are frantically trying to sort out the overpayment fiasco before Ofcom fine them. Maybe he does not understand the technology OR TT do not have access to all the BT cabinets. In the light of what he has said, I would sign up with BT. Are you sure that you have an enabled BT cabinet close by? If it is halfway back to the exchange, then BT may be exaggerating their service speed. Are you sure that TT are using the same BT service? I understood that TT were using their own backhaul and so any restriction may occur with the TT net or in the exchange where the service is handed over from BT to TT.

Sorry ETEE your mistaken, OCE_Chris is not the TTMF web designer. The TTMF web designer is Chris on an orange background not the green background of TTMF support staff. They are two different people.

Quite honestly in my opinion there is no point in giving someone who is on 15Mbps FTTC and not giving it to people who are on 2Mbps. The 2Mbps people would get the most benefit so long as they are not too far from the cabinet.

I think TT have not got very much information out regarding the Fibre products. I have been told that come Jan they will be supplying it through the BT network and they will be providing it though a virtual LLU (so still through BT's fibre) so esentially reselling the service and not as a fully LLU service.

The ins and outs have not been agreed between BT and TT (from the information i have seen). The 15mg limit was something BT said a while ago however i think this has been dropped to 5mg. I think the OCE has misinformation as it wasnt for people who currently get 15+mg services on a adsl product but for people who would get 15+mg service on a fibre product (as estimated on the BT checker) so he kinda has his information mixed up.

That makes more sense to me. That would suggest that anyone within about about a 1/2 Km of their cabinet would be able to get FTTC regardless of the speed they are getting from the exchange now.

yep thats correct, and i think bt have dropped the limit to 5mg, esentially allowing most users to benefit as in the long run, bt will get the money back they have put in with more people being on the fibre service as it should be cheaper to provide once the network is properly in place.

That would suggest that even people with a 60+dB attenuation could easily qualify. To get less than 5Mbps FTTC they would be over 3.6 Km (nearly 2.25 miles) from the cabinet. I suspect there are not may people that far from the cabinet even in rural areas.

TT advertise the product as guaranteeing a speed of at least 15Mbps. Would seem that they have taken a conscious decision not to provide service at speeds below this at this time.

Guaranteed speed:
Our great value Fibre Optic Boost will guarantee your download speed at least 15Meg (up to a maximum 40Meg).

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/4488-bt-reduce-mi...

I think TT have not provided the details to the OCE staff as what he said is just plain wrong assuming people need to have a minimum of 15mg on a adsl line to be able to get fttc.
