Which speed? Throughput or Sync? Throughput is always limited by sync. You are only suffering from congestion when throughput is far lower than sync.

Thanks once again Xray, I have to admit my ignorance here as regards the technical stuff.

I just understand it in my simple laymans terms, if I do a speedtest and it comes up as a poor download speed and if it seems to happen more and more at peak times, then I tend to reach the conclusion that it has something to do with the number of people who are trying to use the local Talktalk network at that particular time..

Especially if it then reverts to what I consider a normal download speed for me at off peak times.

I get your point though about throughput and sync as my sync wasn't great in earlier router stats.

That is a fair conclusion . But it is best to confirm by looking at router stats at the time. If the sync speed is also low (only about 20% higher than speedtest) then congestion isn't swamping you. That was exactly the situation you had with your 1st set of stats. Then it would be best to reboot the router and try and get a higher sync.
