The BT speed tester

Hey, seen lots of links to this lately:

http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/

Im currently in the training period with namesco and wanted to give it a shot, but it never works. it sits at:

Checking user details
Your details will be verified after clicking the Go button

For about 5 mins before I get an error message.

Anyone know whats wrong?

Lots of folks have said they get problems with it but it worked fine for me. Nobody seems certain if it just in dev or available officially.

One thing to note is that it requires a java virtual machine to be installed and that can take a while to initialise.

I think the most useful thing it does is report what your profile speed is set to. As a useful speedtest I'd say it is no better than any other as contention can vary so much over a short period.

Just tried it again and it's timing out on me too now. The jvm is only for the "progress bar" at the top so far as I can see and I didn't get the phone number prompt til after that started. I've tried FF + IE both stall. My guess is that it is querying a backend server about your phone number and that is not responding.

best tester i use is

www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk

shows much better and higher than others

Yes but that one will not tell you what your BRAS profile is set at.

does this BT tester actaully test your speed before getting on to the ISPs network, or is that only available by running it with the bt_test login account?
