Line dropping, no where else to turn....

[link to this post]

Good day all..
I have been reading majority of stuff here and trying to work out the problem with my DSL myself, as Orange dont seem to be able to help me.

We have had ongoing issues with our DSL connection since around march 06. (according to samknows, this is when our exchange got converted to be capable of MaxDSL)

Numerous calls to Orange have proved fruitless. Numerous BT line checks havent found anything. Recently they did find a voice error through. Openreach tech came to house. found corroded wires on pole, and redid them. Voice line now clear. Still get faint dsl noise in background, but nothing major.
He performed a Woosh test, got a 99% reading back he said. (before work it was a 64%)

Our line stats are very irratic and never seem to stay in one place. SNR can be all over the place, right down to 5.0db dwn and have seen it up at 20db dwn at times.

Face plate is an ADSLNation XTE-2005
Even direct into test socket doesnt improve anything.

I have a few devices.
BT Voyager 2100
D-Link DSL-G624M
(Orange Issued) Thomson Speedtouch 330 USB.

Speedtouch seems to connect regardless of whats happening with the line but will drop regularly.
BT Voyager cant sync at all today.
Dont know how to get stats off the speedtouch.

Stats from the D-Link
Model Name DSL-G624M Firmware Version DSL-G624M.UK.B02T09.20051212

DownStream : FEC 0

DownStream: HEC(ATM Layer) 713

This was up for about 30 seconds before it dropped out.

I dont know what to try or do next. Orange dont seem to want to help. They have even told me to try clearing out my Internet Cache.

I think i have included everything.. not sure.
Any help, ideas, questions.. please feel free.. I'm totally lost now.
Its been going on for months and months and I dont know where to turn.

Thankyou!

The problem is due to whatever is causing your SNR margin to drop so low as anything below 6db is normally unstable. As you have tested from the test socket without imrpvement then it is not your own internal wiring that is the problem. However, the actual cause of the SNR margin drop, i.e. added noise getting on to your line, could be anywhere between you and the exchange. Whether it is actually directly linked to the upgrading of the exchange or whether this is purely coincidental is almost impossible to say. Though one possibility is increased cross talk, especially if you tend to lose the conenction at busier times. But what you do about it is another matter apart from possibly downgrading to 512Kb which would give you a better SNR margin and hence a more stable but slower speed service.

Does your modem report attenuation (line loss) ?

One thing which does occur to me (clutching at straws too) - is your modem power fed by USB ? Some PC's struggle to provide enough power to the USB ports, but these are usually older PC's. You could try getting a modem/router which will have its own power supply. The Speedtouch 545 can be had for about

The USB Speedtouch doesnt, however i dont think that its the usb modem.
There are days when the speedtouch usb will connect and stay connected for a few hours.

The D-Link is terrible at giving any info about the line, I know what the SNR is, and the errors but thats all it reports.

The BT-Voyager is much better.
Today is a better day than we have had in a while.
Downstream I have:

Noise Margin 16.3 dB
Line Attenuation 48.0 dB
Output Power 11.9 dBm

HEC Errors 151 (and raising quick.)
Been connected about 6 mins.

Had a Whoosh test done on line, reported back as 99% according to BT engineer.
Line seems quiet today, no crackle or noise.

HI!

I have the same problem with my line... actually your ISP is responsible to give you the connection... so get on their back and make sure that they escalate with BT... it IS their responsibility to ensure that you get connected. If they come back to you and say that there is permanent fault on the line then you can cancel and get a cable supplier... the only other alternative (I know of) to the copper wire provided by BT (regardless of the ISP).

Just so you know I have been with bad service since June - when I moved into my new house...

Hope this helps...

Or.. migrate to an ISP with a more helpful attitude to escalating to BT. Zen, IDnet and (of course) Newnet spring to mind.
