Upload vs Download Speed

Hi,

i've just done a speed check & discovered that whilst my download speed is slightly lower than what my provider claims (not too bothered about that), my upload speed is nothing like.

Is this normal?

Ok i've just rerun the test & got the results below.

Speed Down 147.57 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )
Speed Up 98.99 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )

These results are totally different from the ones I got this morning.

My supposed connection is 1.1Mbps, so now i'm less happy - grrrrrrrrrrr.

Unless of course this is to be expected.

Well, those figures are basically rubbish.

From what you say, you have a fixed-rate ADSL connection of 1Mbps, your sync speed will be 1152kbps (dredging memory). If so, you should be looking for d/l speeds of around 960kbps, upload around 26kbps (again, dredging memory).

Who is your ISP?

Speedtests do vary tremendously throughout the day. At peak times, they will drop. If I wanted to benchmark my system, I'd probably do it around 5am to see the maximum that could be obtained, and to reduce the chance of contention or server load being a factor in the result.

It would be worth trying the BT tester here, but be patient with it, again 5am is a good time.

Can you get to your line stats? If so, post them here, people will be able to advise you if there's anything you need to sort out.

My provider is Tiscali.

I've been with them for around 4 years now & have been happy on the whole.

Ok so moving on a bit - how do I do a Line-test? (and would I be better off doing that at 5am as well?)

Tiscali tends to be treated as a swear word in these parts, a lot of your problems may stem from them.

If you click on the link in my last post, it will take you to the BT tester. Just follow the instructions, then cut & paste the results back here. 5am can be taken with a pinch of salt, but certainly try to do a test before 8am.

Yes, our nemesis is back. I calculate the score as Scotland 20 - England 15 - Johnny Wilkinson 27. Nice to see him back in action all the same.

ADSL (asynchronous DSL) always has much faster downloading than uploading because the system itself gives priority to downloads. You could get synchronous DSL but it would cost an awful lot more
