Can I get swapped to a new pair? (SNR)

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Of the four houses built in this development we were first to move in and get connected, utilising an existing cable which runs up to the farmhouse up the track. A month after we moved in a new BT cable was laid, and the remaining three properties are connected to that cable (50-pair, judging by the thickness).

Both myself (old cable) and the house next door (new cable) get a solid 8128/832 connection, and we both have 13 attenuation. However we have SNR hovering around 10 or 11, and the property next door gets 17.

At the moment it's a moot point since our exchange does not yet have ADSL2+. But when ADSL2+ does come then we'd have a much lower speed than the neighbours. Also, an SNR of 10 for us doesn't give us that much leeway above the target of 6.

Is there any mechanism to get moved onto the new cable? Would BT do this for free or for a fee? Or should I just be pleased that I get 8128 anyway?

Many thanks,

Jim (approx 800 metres from exchange via cable run, and 400 as crow flies)

Yes you should be please with that!

Most people have problems getting a line with issues improved - you've got an 8128 connection and still hope BT will do more...! smile

Yeah, I knew I wasn't in a good situation for sympathy smile

We've still got two years to run until our shed gets ADSL2+, but I was just trying to sort this now rather than in 2 years time. But I guess I'll wait....

Feel lucky Jim. I have no date for ADSL2+, and even if I had a line fault that doesn't affect the voice service has taken my line from BRAS 5000 down to BRAS 2000 and BT have set a fault limit of 1.8Mbps so won't investigate. 3 years of stable 5Mbps+ operation is irrelevant it appears.

Be grateful for what you have.

Hi Brian,

yes, I knew I'd be pushing my luck a little. It was just so frustrating seeing the next door neighbours getting a much better SNR than I was.

According to SamKnows:

BT have set a target date of Q4 2011 for the switch to 21CN for the Balbeggie exchange

so at least we have a timetable. It's a long way off, but at least it's coming. I'll just pretend it's "rural fibre" smile

HOWEVER....in a last-ditched attempt at improving things I've opened up the BT socket again. Sure enough the cables were ok, and sure enough the bell wire is disconnected. BUT.....what's that bit of fluff in the connection? A-ha, wall insulation (fibre glass stuff). I've now remove that and VOILA! My SNR is now 16! I've read about other people discovering that fluff (wall / carpet / bellybutton) is interfering with the line, but I was sure mine was clear. I guess not.

So, happy me!

Excellent news! That's one for the little black book.

I had not thought that glass fibre could do that, it should be non-conductive.
