AOL Slow Connection

[link to this post]

Hi,

For the past few weeks internet hs been going on and of, Finally AOL has managed to keep it on for a few days but now the connection is stupidly slow as you can see from the test, Have phoned them and they said they are experiencing problems so the connection is slow but I take what they say with a pinch of salt so would be good to hear from others users or people that may know about the problem thanks.

Best to post all the stats for your connection e.g. Noise Margin, Attenuation etc etc

Could i suggest that you download and use this >>

http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm

It'll let you see what happening on your phone line to the exchange and help in finding out whether it's AOL/CPW or noise problems affecting the connection . Do you know what your speeds were before this problem started .
I use to have this Down Up
04/07/10 17:09 Sun 78 Kbps 373 Kbps
03/07/10 00:55 Sat 116 Kbps 341 Kbps
02/07/10 13:41 Fri 99 Kbps 376 Kbps
01/07/10 21:57 Thu 126 Kbps 341 Kbps

now I have this

24/09/10 02:28 Fri 4889 Kbps 364 Kbps 92.
24/09/10 00:15 Fri 4912 Kbps 363 Kbps 92.8.
23/09/10 15:18 Thu 4539 Kbps 357 Kbps 92.xxxxxxxx
22/09/10 14:34 Wed 4957 Kbps 364 Kbps 92.xxxxxx
22/09/10 02:10 Wed 4923 Kbps 363 Kbps 92.xxxxx
21/09/10 23:25 Tue 3728 Kbps 364 Kbps

It had been caused by and Intermintant Fault which kept dropping sync when the Phone was used , a High resistence fault ,

I would like to thank every one who posts here as it was only after reading many may posts about Slow speed that I found the Routstats Prog and realised that it wasn't just a noisy long line . It was pure luck that when phoning into BT with the fault that I heard my neighbour speaking on the line, A tiny break in the wires was bridged when phone calls were made , then a huge spike caused repeated re syncs so the DLM thingy kept everything very low on the Unstable line,
Err thats my take on what I've learned by reading here , I'm open to be corrected !
! but going from 160 kbs for years to 4 megs at the best is a JOY !!!

Very bad.

Can you restart the modem and get the numbers again. Hoping that the downstream rate will improve.

If not it looks like AOL has locked you to a 0.5Meg connection, and you need to pester them about this. The line looks capable of doing 4 to 6Meg.
