DSL - 5 sec on / 15 sec off - indefinitely

[link to this post]

I signed up with Tiscali UK almost a month ago - OK, titter ye not !

To date, I have still not been able to connect to their "service"

Modem diagnostics show a DSL signal present for 5 seconds, then off for 15 - the cycle repeats indefinitely.

Does anyone have any idea as to the significance of this please ??

Thanks in advance,

Phil

It means that the modem isn't sync'ing. You're not connecting it through a filter, or a filtered socket, are you ?

Use these instructions to test at the NTE(master) socket, with all else disconnected. If it still fails at this point, then it is either the supplied modem is faulty (not unheard of) or a fault outside your premises which Openreach should repair, arranging this must be done via your ISP.

Thanks for your comment.

All I have is a normal BT socket linked directly to a microfilter, the modem connects directly to the ADSL output from this and a single phone to the phone output. Nothing else is present.

I have now tried three microfilters and three RJ11 cables and get the same result on everything.

I should emphasise that (rubbish) Tiscali are detecting a line fault, but appear to have ruled out a problem at the exchange.

Yes, I have already switched connecting to the test socket inside the master socket.

I'm also getting exactly the same results using a new LinkSys modem/router.

OK, so it looks you have done all you can, you must push for Tiscali to have this resolved. This can be difficult, and I suspect you will shortly find out why so many have a negative view of the. Good luck.

In all honesty, thier TS couldn't hit a pig's ar*e with a banjo. I attended one of their punters this week, she had been on the phone to them for 6 weeks before they called 'us' in, and in all that time, none of the support staff had asked any questions that might ascertain that the punter had the kit plugged into the wrong line................

And I suppose she had? Priceless.
