Demon Issues

[link to this post]

Hi All,

This is my first post on here but I will say that I'm not a total newbie, having worked in Eire introducing Static and Wireless Broadband way back in 1997. Speeds have got better, but oh dear how standards of customer service have slipped!

But i digress...

My issue is that I have now got Demon broadband and right from the start I've had serious issues with the implementation. The line didn't work at all initially, so I had a BT visit to the exchange (where apparently the MUX was not wired up correctly) and also to my property.

The BT engineer diligently checked my line and confirmed (as I live within 1K from the exchange) that I was good for 8Mb.

Unfortunately the best I can get is 3.4Mb and Demon have confirmed that my line speed has been set at 2.6Mb (with variations a la MaxADSL).

After several frustrating conversations with Demon (including numerous calls not returned as promised) they conceded that there was a problem, especially when I presented my reasonably good line stats.

I have been given several 'tests' to try but I'd liek a bit of a peer review of my line stats to make sure that the consensus view is that my line is able to support higher speeds than I am currently enjoying.

The stats are:

ADSL Link / Downstream / Upstream
Connection Speed / 7616 kbps / 448 kbps
Line Attenuation / 15.5 db / 12.0 db
Noise Margin / 10.6 db / 16.0 db

Any thoughts?

Connection Speed / 7616 kbps / 448 kbps

its going as fast as its going to.

IP profile from speedtester.bt.com ? (perseverance required, early start recommended).

Sorry, I believe I misrepresented the problem. My router shows that I am connecting at 7616, but a thinkbroadband speedcheck (and several others) shows that at most I am managing 3.4Meg... Clearly at some point the throughput is being choked.

Hope that's clearer...

You certainly need to do the BT speedtester test as Phil says, so as to take the ISP and your computer configs out of the loop. Try 5am - 3 or 4 tries should get you on!

First of all those are quite nice line stats, almost as if your less than 0.5m away from exchange.

Also you should do the bt speedtester, it will tell you what your IP profile is, maybe your profile has been set to a lower profile then it should be hence the slow speed, you should get that cleared first. If you see your profile higher than 7meg, then it's mostly demons problem that their not giving you the full speed. Your router syncs at the maximum speed offered by MaxDsl so your line is perfectly capable.

Thank you all.

I've been having real issues getting the speedtester to work, even when I change my login to to the speedtest@speedtest_domain setting.

The girlfriend finally dragged me away from my laptop at 1am this morning after hearing me threatening to hurl it out of the second floor window.

I'll try again tonight...

try at 6am in the morning, it usually works then. Also check out your RWIN value.
