Thanks guys. After posting on the Tiscali technical support forum and explaining my position, I was issued with a MAC. 10 minutes later I had signed up with IDNet, so here's hoping I see some drastic improvement once my migration goes through. They are a bit more expensive, but I've learnt the truth in Zebedeee's comment the hard way.

Thanks again for all your help, I really appreciate it.

I have been very happy with the general level of service of all the ISPs I have used. When I have left it was either because of a change of circumstances (moving so finding a more appropriate ISP in the new circumstances) or a specific point of disagreement unrelated to the general level. I have also noted that in most cases I was paying less than customers of other ISPs who made complaints about service inadequacies which I didn't see.

This is one of many areas where paying more is no guarantee that the product is better. A small, efficient organisation can usually provide a better service at a lower rate than its larger competitors and make more profit for its owners.

I think you only have to look at which companies consistantly win awards for their services to see that the cheaper ones don't usually rate too highly. Don't forget that you're not just paying for the broadband provision, you're paying for the back office and tech support as well. Quite often people think they're getting good value for money until they have a problem, and then they find their tech support is a sweat shop somewhere in Calcutta, with someone who barely speaks English working from a computer script.
