Stuck IPprofile

[link to this post]

I am with Tiscali. I upgraded from their 2 meg service to 8meg Max in early March. After the upgrade I was on an IPstream product.

During the whole of the 10 day training period my IPprofile never changed from 2 meg and has never changed since (as shown by the BT tester).

My router always synchs at 8218kbps. The line stats are typically 28db download attenuation and a noise margin of 9db daytime dropping to 6 or 7 at night.

In the first 2 days of the training period I had an old computer with a noisy power supply close to the extension wiring which affected the noise margin. Even then it never sync'd at less than 7meg. I have replaced the power supply since when the sync is always 8128 as I already said.

I have been pressing Tiscali to get this profile freed up but BT have said there is no fault. I can't see how this could be the case and am still pushing Tiscali. Since I raised this in their forum lots of others have come out of the woodwork with the same issue.

Can anyone help explain to me how BT could say there is no fault? What more can I do?

If I migrated to another ISP would BT start the training again with a freed-up profile?

What is your upstream sync rate? You may have a stuck profile or you may still be on a fixed 2Mb/s service.

Thanks for your reply john2007.

This is what I get from BT tester:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1855 kbps

Seems clear I am supposed to be on Max.

Those appear to be Max figures. If you're confident that you have had those figures for at least 3 days, without sync'ing at a lower rate during that period, then I'd say you have a stuck profile. If that's the case tell your ISP your profile is stuck.

Yes I'm totally confident about syncs. Always get 8 now and router doesn't lose connection.

Regarding ISP, I've been arguing with them for a month now and got nowhere. I wish I could talk to BTW directly.

Do you know the answer to the point about migration? Do they start again or just transfer your existing profile? (assuming it's another IPstream connection with the new ISP).

No, I don't know what happens. You might find an ISP who is more forceful on your behalf though and will press BT to resolve the stuck profile.

I think MrSaffron occasionally tries to intervene in these cases. Search through the forums for stuck profiles. If he does occasionally intervene it might be worth sending him a PM.

Thanks for your interest John. I'll have a nosey round tomorrow. Maybe Mr Saffron will see this anyway. I just wonder if Tiscali have some vested interest in having their IPstream customers' service throttled by BT as it reduces pressure on their own part of the network. I also suspect they make a loss on us with 8meg (hoho) with 30Gig data limit and free anytime phone calls for

I am getting totally frustrated with this! I have now been trying to get this sorted out with Tiscali for a month. They don't even answer in their Service Forum the simple question of whether they are still pressing BTW to get my profile freed-up.

The people I really want to talk to are BTW themselves, but I seem to have no avenue to do that. Does anyone have any tips about where to go from here?

All I can suggest is that you try posting on the Tiscali forum. Readers there may be more aware of which buttons to press to get Tiscali to move on this issue.
