Problems with my internet connection and xbox live

[link to this post]

Right heres my problem, i have recently moved up to 8 mg broadband with Virgin Media from 2 mg. My xbox live connection was okay with 2mg but now i cannot use xbox live during peak hours because my ping is so high. i have been told that it may be because of how my connections are set up.

i have a modem which was sent with my broadband with connects to my computer and a router with is connected to my xbox live, both running through my phoneline, i cant use them both at the same time but this is not very important to me i just need to reduce my ping so i can use xbox live during peak hours.

i would be grateful for any help or if you need any more info to help me then just tell me.

May be due to the fact that you may be interleaved on 'up to 8Mb ADSL max' (I am).

Ping speeds are at best 35ms, whereas with un-interleaved they may be a lot lot lower.

You could do the test with the Speedtouch program and 'save log' which will tell you whether you are interleaved or not.

Right click the icon in your tray, select 'Advanced' and then 'Write log file to disk' (choose desktop as destination and open with Internet Explorer. Allow it to open fully and copy and paste the results here.

Hope that helps,
Mike.

Just remembered, if you want to check your ping speeds try this program...

http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html (choose the bottom Freeware one to try).

You can select a few UK sites to test with; I often use www.bbc.net.uk which has a fairly good server at the other end.

Thanks

Do you think it could run quicker if i connected the internet connection to the router and got rid of the modem altogether?

Do you have access to any stats from the modem. ATT, SNR, Sync & CRC or FEC errors? Do the stats say interleave or fast path?

I thought the router was the bigger problem, the internet is running at quite a good speed and the xbox live is slower.

As previous poster said, when your line was changed to Max it may have had interleaving turned on to stabilise your line. This will affect your online gaming. This is the problem, slow online gaming, or have I misread?

The modem is the box which transmits data to and from the exchange. Without the modem you have no internet connection.

In reply to:

If I'm reading this correctly, you have an ADSL modem and an ADSL router, and are connecting whichever one you are needing at the time??

I would suggest ditching the modem and setting up the router, using it for both the PC and Xbox. It can be left permanently connected and reduce the possibility of your IP profile dropping due to alot of resyncs. Are you using a cable or wireless for the Xbox? If feasible use a cable and see if the pings decrease.

Ok, im not so hot with the technical things on computers and routers, is it my router which is interleaving and how should i stop the interleaving from happening?

Does my router need changing beacause of the change in broadband?

Thanks for everyones help so far by the way
