question about 8mb MAX

[link to this post]

Hi

I have just switched to BT from Tiscali (who are useless)

I signed up to 8mb MAX and was connected 12 days ago. I have had constant downstream speeds of 1.8mb ever since I was connected.

BT say that may my speeds should vary for the first 15 days or so for the engineers to fix the highest speed but it has remained constant.

When I was with Tiscali I had 5.5mbs for a short while. (Before they restricted my service).

I only live about 0.3 miles from the exchnage and a friend at work says he has been with BT for 6 months and he is fixed on 1.8mb too despite being on 8mb max and he also lives close to the exhange.

Should I be getting some faster speeds by now? Why would they keep it a constant speed if they are supposed to be testing the fastest speed?

Regards

To tell this you need to let us know the stats, ATT, SNR & Sync from your router.

Just because you don't live too far from the exchange does not mean your telephone line comes straight to you, it may go all round town first, although if you got 5.5M from Tiscali your line should be able to get at least close to this again.

Check Here to tell what your current IP Profile is as it sometimes get stuck at around this figure, you might need to try this in the early morning time.

Hi

Thanks for that but the link didnt give me any stats. just a downstream speed:

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user ********** and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

1862 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is 86.145.40.220, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and is running on Windows NT 6.0.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.

Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk.

The stats you will need to get from the router / modem. What make & model are you using?

Did the BT Speedtest not tell you your IP Profile?

BT Homehub. I cant find any stats from the router configuration like the ones you mentioned.

The speed test only gave my downstream speed and my browser and os.

Check KITZ to pull off your stats.

Some people get a stuck IP Profile at 2M speed which gives similar speedtest figures to the ones you have given. I must have given a dodgy link if the BT speedtest does not show your IP profile but am not at home so can not give the correct link at moment, hopefully someone else can provide.

You are on a fixed 2M connection, that is the reason for the speed results. You need to contact your ISP & tell them that your line needs to be MAXed.
You should get a full speed 7.15M Profile with those line figures. In fact if you were with an ISP that used ADSL 2+ you would get somewhere close to 20M with those figures

The 2M fixed connection may be why you are not given an IP Profile on the BT speed test.
