Filters can wear out..

I can't say I believed it when I first read it but we've had one of them go in our office now (still seems odd to me since it's in our server room out of harm's way) so it seems to be true. I'm wondering about the dedicated face plates. I have one from back when I had engineer installed ADSL. Do these wear out? Mine is apparently going fine after several years. Is it just a case of being better constructed or do they use a different technique?

Did it "wear out", or did it have a faulty component inside, which eventually failed ?

The quality of electronic components these days is excellent, but you will still see the occasional failure. Also, being at the end of a long wire makes these devices prone to induced voltages from nearby electrical storms. Last year we had a cloud-to-cloud strike near the house (not a direct hit) which damaged an ADSL filter, as well as some other electronics connected to the phone line.

No idea. We just noticed that one of our load balanced line suddenly crapped out. I seem to remember a thread a while back where it was suggested that filters wear out over time. It surprised me.

Extreme heat/cold, being hit by the vacuum cleaner each week can sometimes be a problem, as can the leeching of electronics back down the line into the BT standby batteries

It would have to be a faulty component or possibly joint as there is absolutely nothing to wear. Assuming the filter used an electrolytic capacitor - as pictured clearly in the filters on this page - http://www.adslnation.com/support/filters.php - that would be my guess as the culprit.

They do go faulty from time to time. i've had a few go over the years for myself or family members.

Filtered faceplates seem to be a lot more reliable.
