Help, whats Going On!

Hi Guys, first post so be gentle with me as i'm gonna jump in feet first.

I have had a problem for the last 3 weeks, My line has been Syncing at 2800 and has been constantly stable for the last 18 Months, Over the past 3 weeks my line drops on a regular basis between 850 and1350, and the BRAS profile drops. I reset the modem, seems to pick up after 24 Hrs and the BRAS seems to reset at around 2 Meg

I have 2 DG 834 V2'swhich I have swapped over, one runs the DG team firware the other standard. Both routers drop out.

BT wont do anything, they have supposedly checked the line and say everthing is fine, but will cost £200 to get an Engineer out. Zen My ISP have checked the line they say they can hear White noise on the line but its not at their end. They can get BT out but that will cost me £200 again.

Where do I go from here, do i Switch to a LLU provider, buy a new Modem Router or what. My line stats are as follows

Connection Speed 1312 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 17 db

These are plugged into the test socket on the NTE5 box as well. The linestats have gradually gone up from around 40-45 to 52-54 since last year after I had a simular problem.

Ii know these arn't too good, would LLU make any differance to stability and sync speed.

I have been running linestats for the last 3 days, but I dont want to bore you with them just yet. Noise margin has been anywhere from 15 down to 7 or 8.

Please help, I'm at the end of my rope being thretend with a £200 bill

The default downstream target SNR margin is 6dB (compromise between speed and stability). Yours seems to have been raised to 9 or 12 dB. This would account for a loss of sync rate.

Have you tried new filters? They can fail. If you are not always plugged in via the test socket have you disconnected the ring wire.

You are on a fairly long line - slightly higher attenuation than my own line.
I used to use a Netgear DG834v2 and found the AR7 chipset was causing me problems.

I switched to a Thomson Speedtouch 585v6 (new £30 from eBay) and it transformed my connection - see signature link for details.

I would recommend trying a Broadcom based router like the 585v6 (or Netgear DG834v4) to see if it improves things for you.

I have tried new filters, that doesn't seem to have made a difference, I have also plugged directly into the test socket with same result.

I have had 2 more disconnections today whilst there was no one in the house

What I cant understand is why has the line been stable for over a year at 2800, then drops out and reconnects at the lower rate I mentioned before. As I said before, I have tried a different modem albeit another DG834 V2

Why would the Attenuation rise 10 db in a year on the line.

b4ager, I thought about a different modem and I know my exchange, Dinnington is LLU'd so instead of spending the money on another Modem, would I not be better using the money I would have spent on a modem and taking the supplied 585 v7supplied by BE or 02 and give them a try - Would LLU give me a better connection??

LLU would set you free from BT's IP Profile system so that would be good!

As I mentioned my router was only £30 so worth a punt - or have you a friend you could borrow a router off perhaps?

Might you not find out that you had swapped ISP's and still have the same problem ?

Assuming the before and after measurements were taken using the same router the most likely culprit would be a corroded joint. If different kit was used then all bets are off because there is no standard set for what constitute "the attenuation" and measuring at different frequencies gives different results.
