Virgin/NTL 250 Modem and Dynamode BR6004 Router

[link to this post]

Hi,

My friend has a Virgin NTL250 modem connected via the WAN port of a Dynamode BR6004W-G-N wireless router.
He has two computers, an old Mesh desktop and a Packard Bell laptop (Easynote?). The desktop pc connects via the router/modem via cat5e ethernet with no problems and the laptop also connects via wireless also with no problems. However, when I try to connect via the laptop's ethernet port I get the "Cable disconnected" windows error message. and the relevant LAN port light on the router is unlit. The ethernet port on the laptop appears to be ok, the laptop connects fine via my own BT home hub ethernet port.
I am using DHCP on the router - coulld this be a problem for this particular modem router combo? i.e. assign an address (static address) to the two computers? I also read somewhere that you had to MAC spoof a second pc to a NTL modem/router combo but I thought that Virgin had stopped this nonsense?
I have tried the usual reboot order things - turn off modem and router, leave a little time, boot modem, then reboot router to no avail.
If this is a Technical FAQ, forgive the post, could someone let me have the link?

If your not even getting ethernet connectivity to the router then that is the 1st thing to sort out, and maybe the root of the problem, before looking at MAC address or anything on the NTL (Virgin) side.
Are you using a crossover cable? Modern kit can usually detect the cable/ port type and auto adjust but older kit may not and you may need a straight patch cable.

Thanks for the reply, I may not have been clear in my original post but the desktop pc connects fine through the router/modem. When I add the laptop to the LAN the desktop remains connected but the laptop does'nt connect ("a cable may be disconnected"). I made up the cat5e ethernet wiring myself (works on my home machine) and I have tried that and a bought cable. I made up my cable to T568B standard ie twisted pair. As the router is a 2007 model surely it can handle the T Base 100 standard?

Should have auto-sensing ports if its that new.
There is a problem between the NIC and the router, hence the error reported, or at least the OS thinks there is. Try updating /reinstalling the drivers for the NIC and an alternative cable.

Hiya,

Thanks again for the reply, yup, tried reinstalling driver for the nvidia on board NIC (one of the first things I did) - no joy, as for the cable smile, how many should I try about? Done about 4 so far.
I should have told yesterday (I was tired) that the connection works when I connect the laptop directly to the modem, which tends to lead me that the issue lies with adding a second machine to the router and therefore there is an issue with the virgin/ntl 250 modem connecting to a router. Various forums (I have googled) mention Virgin modem/router issues. I wrote about the problem here as the help I received in the past was good.
I have noticed that Virgin Broadband has it's own Technical forum on this site, perhaps a Moderator would be so kind as to move the post (and its replies) there.

Maybe, but you shold still get ethernet connectivity between the laptop and the router. If you disconnect the cable modem from the router do you get ethernet connectivity between lappy and router?
If not then you still have a problem between laptop and router.

I am having exactly the same problem (NTL:250 and netgear wgt624) where the enet light will not come on when connected to the WAN port of the router. Cables checked, router checked modem checked, computer checked and all ok and working. Just when you plug the WAN port into the cable modem it does not register the cable.

Did you manage to get to the bottom of it?
