Cisco config question

Ok, got the 2811. HWIC-2 plus the two standard two on board FastEthernet ports....

interfaces set up Fas0/0 is 10.1.10.1/16, Fas0/1 is down, Fas0/0/0 is 10.2.10.1/16 and Fas0/0/1 is 10.5.10.1/16 (historical IPs, not changeable)

For this issue we will be ignoring Fas0/0/1 (10.5.10.1) because the interface is shut down.

Two PCs connected, one to fas0/0 with IP 10.1.80.1 the other on Fas0/0/0 with IP 10.2.80.1. Both with the correct router IP as their default gateway.

No DHCP or anything flash. All configured from the console and SDM is not running

Each PC can ping any router address so 10.1.80.1 can ping both 10.1.10.1 and 10.2.10.1; likewise10.2.80.1 can ping both router addresses.

However the PCs can't ping each other, nor can the router ping the PCs.

I am obviously being stupid and missing something from the config that will make it just work - any tips as to where I can find a clue bat? smile

So you've got...

Fa0/0 = 10.1.10.1/16
Fa0/0/0 = 10.2.10.1/16

PC > Fa0/0 = 10.1.80.1/16
PC > Fa0/0/0 = 10.2.80.1/16

If you do a "show ip route", both PC's should be directly connected. If you do a "show arp", they should both be in the arp table.

With everything being directly connected, I wouldn't have thought RIP would be required.

You sure all the subnets are correct?

Probably best to just paste us the output of a "show run", a "show ip route", and a "show arp".

Thanks for the sanity check.

I will make sure the nets are correct and that I have the PCs connected to the ports I think they should be, then post the show run/show arp on Monday when I can get at the router.

My hunch is that I have, somehow, got the PCs connected to the 'wrong' ports or something equally stupid.

Ok... owing to BT/Entanet ADSL incompetence I get to go in to work today.... so here is the running config and the arp table.

It would appear from the ARP table that I have the right things plugged into the right interfaces.

I am slightly concerned that the running config shows no "ip routing" line... should I be?
I have also hacked out all the self signed key bits to make this post shorter. We aren't (AFAIK) using authenticated stuff on the machine so it shouldn't be relevent.

Shortly after posting my last I went back to the router and, miraculously, everything seems to be working... now to work out why the router boots to rommon> and not straight to IOS...

Cool, glad it's working smile

If this router has a WAN interface, you'll need:

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Dialer0

(assuming Dialer0 is your WAN interface)

That'll default route any IP traffic not in the routing table over the WAN. Required if you want external connectivity. Unless you have another router on your network with a working WAN link, then you could use its IP instead of Dialer0.

Do a show version, and see what the last line, config register is saying should be 0x2102. if not then conf t, configuration-register 0x2102, end, copy run start, reload.

Hi,

Thanks again. Sanity checks are good... I will need a default route eventually but not just yet. At the moment I know where everything goes with this router - it is linking up an intranet via 10/100Mbps WAN connections.

RIP beckons at stage 2 or three of the current project, however at the moment static routes rule!

We don't have a dial connection on this router (yet, though it is a possibility in the future I guess)

Is it booting to rommon because it's expecting a boot flash: command (or wherever you're storing IOS)?
