Broadband options - Whats available to us?

[link to this post]

Hi

I work with the Tan Hill inn based in North Yorkshire (middle of the pennine way).

Earlier this year the Satellite BB service provided on the Gilat platform was withdrawn by RDS the service providor. From this date we have looked at numerous possibilities to enable BB access to the property. The property is in the middle of nowhere and the telephone lines are provided by Digital Microwave Link with the transmitter placed at the BOWES exchange around 4 - 6 KM away (there is line of sight). The box at the property reads:

Rainford Solutions Ltd
Aprisa XE 4RF ISP 192.168.254.254
Subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Cabinet ref # 3557 021218
No 8198

I have been told this cabinet needs nothing more than a card inserting to enable the broadband (but that was by the guy who installed the analogue system before the digital upgrade and he no longer works for BT - The guy who got the lines sorted for install Mike Fox has unfortunatley passed away otherwise we peobably would have been sorted by now)

To sign up to another platform with RDS or another sattelite provider will incur costs for new equipment compatible with the new platform (idirect i think) and as the service on the gilat platform was terrible and we ended up on a contention ratio of 75 as opposed to 35 as when first sold we dont want to spen a couple of grand to get a bad BB service.

There are options we have suggested to BT like long range outdoor wireless transmitters and receivers from Faculty X (mounted at the exchange and wired to a direct connection) but BT keeps knocking them back as unsuitable.

Is there anyone who knows about any type of connection like this being done at a reasonable cost as opposed to the 17 thousand install and 5 thousand per annum being quoted by BT to have the microwave link BB enabled.

Thanks
Mark

do you know anyone who lives close to the exchange that is in line of site from you, or might you persuade someone to host a broadband connection and the other end of a wireless link. Perhaps a farm building with power if no houses ?

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

Are your kids pirates ? Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, BitTorrent, eMule are all tools of the trade.
