Best way to handle initial training period

[link to this post]

I've got a Netgear 834PN with the DGTeam firmware. I was wondering if it's a good idea to play with the SNR value to try and eek out as much bandwidth as possible during the initial 10 day training period ??

I've currently got it at 80% SNR for a sync of about 1940 and a SNR margin of about 8db. Is it better to leave it at 100% SNR for the initial 10 day period, let it find it's natural sync rate, then tweak, or is tweaking during the period ok ??

Could i screw up my sync speed permanently if i set it too low if we have a storm or something and the sync speed is dropped by the DSLAM ?? If that happens, would it be a good idea to put the firmware back upto 100% SNR and let it work it's way back up again before playing ??

I think the biggest danger is lumbering yourself with a low MSR and, therefore, the fault threshold which you're basically stuck with for the line's lifetime.

Personally, I'd leave things at their'natural' settings until at least 14 days have passed.

Thanks John_ON

Was thinking the same ... We got a sync rate of about 2240 with the usual 6db SNRM when we first connected (Fri last week, and a *long* line frown ) then over the weekend had some rain which dropped it down to about 1740 with a SNRM of about 10db .... had a tweak this morning to try and bring the speed back up and got to the 1940 and 8db setting by doing that (was thinking this gives us a few db in case of future bad weather events).

I'm assuming that the router/DSLAM will slowly bring the speed back up to the original over the next few days (assuming that we don't have any bad storms again) ??? I seem to remember reading about roughly 3 days before a increase in line sync is picked up by the DSLAM ??

Will the line just pick up the speed if the weather is good over the next few day by itself ?? Or do i need to periodically reboot it ??

Hi

During the training period it is BEST to leave well alone .

quote :then over the weekend had some rain which dropped it down to about 1740 with a SNRM of about 10db .

what do you mean by "had some rain which dropped it down to about 1740 ".
do you mean you lost synch or was it after a reboot ?.

I notice your SNR margin is showing 10db . The default is 6db , this could mean that your target has already been reset to 9db because the dSLAM has detected an unstable line.
I would sit on my hands until the end of the training period.
see the link below about SNR.

The drop in speed was due to a re-sync apparently after some heavy rain/storms rather than a reboot .... I'm on a long line with an indicated 63.5db of attentuation (i'm aware it could be higher than that).

I've added an XTE-2005 faceplate, and made sure that the link between router and faceplate is good quality twisted pair cable, so i've done about all i can with the internal wiring, so it looks like it's just down to what BT's shocking line can provide over the next few days !!! smile

I think i'll go with the "leave well alone" theory until the end of this week and see what happens smile

Thanks for the advice

There's a lot of mis-conceptions over the "10 day training period". All that happens during this period is that a couple of thresholds are set - the MSR (Max Sync Rate) and the FTR (Fault Threshold Rate). These will be referred to in the future, should a fault occur on your line, and BT Wholesale won't be interested in repairing a BB fault unless your line sync repeatedly drops below the FTR. Nothing that happens during the 10 day training will affect your ability to improve the line after that, but it's in your interests to have the best performance that you can manage in the first 10 days, because it will affect the MSR and FTR.

Lightning is massive RF interference and causes havoc with ADSL, best to unplug during storms (for H&S reasons if storm overhead stay well away from the wiring incase of a direct hit)
