EFM -ethernet first mile

[link to this post]

After a recent visit to our offices by a bt rep we were told it may be possible to get a product called EFM and that our local exchange supports this service.

He is busy quoting on a symetrical 6mb product.

He mentioned somthing about bonding the lines together but it was different from a dsl product hence the 6mb upload.

Have any of you got experiance of these products ?

a bit of googling turned up

http://www.ethernetinthefirstmile.com/

cheers

EFM is used as a lower cost alternative to fibre delivery for some products, but has nothing to do with DSL.
It bonds together multiple copper pairs to form a single Ethernet connection between the customer and BT's 21C network.

It can be used instead of a Leased Line or 10Mb Fibre Ethernet tail circuit for BTnet Premium as well as a couple of other products.

Panda has given a brief explanation - it can actually give up to 10Mbps and is out to 5km. It can be expensive but if you need the capacity then it is a good option. I can also be dynamically managed - one day you may need 10Mbps and the following just 4Mbps and that can be achieved easily.

I was discussing it with both sales and technical reps at BT a few days ago.

thanks for the input guys,

we are currently using bonded dsl to provide vpn links to 2 remote offices but this is providing 1.5mb at best

6mb upload should help somewhat !

Sounds as though you already have a BT contact for it.

There is possibly some room for negotiation in the pricing (just a little) and get them to allow you a "trial" period at say 8Mb (if it can be achieved) whilst paying for say 4Mb so you can establish what your base need is.
