BT NTE5 socket Wiring - Help

[link to this post]

Hello All,

A friend of mine has been playing around with his NTE5 box, trying to wire up the filter

Socket
Filter

He states, the problem is, that the BT incoming wires in the picture are "strange" colours and don't correspond to those talked about on websites.

The 10 incoming I have are 5 x white plus a blue, brown, green, orange and grey.

The blue and a white were connected by BT to the "A and B" (as you can see below) to provide his phone line which also carries my broadband via a remote filter.

I'm ignorant to BT wiring so haven't got a clue.

Can anyone make any recommendations to the wiring?

Assuming you are talking about the black cable inside the NTE, each coloured wire is partnered with one of the white wires, forming a pair. The Blue/White wires connected are the pair from the exchange. The others are unused or 'spare' (and it's 'slate', not grey smile ).
Put the front of the socket back on. You shouldn't need to do anything to the black cable.

Do the ivory cables go to extensions? If so, it is these that need to connect to the filter.

That's what I was thinking.

i thought one of these filters, you plugged them in into the master socket and they worked and they didn't need wiring in.

Surely the wiring is only if you want an extention?

Is this correct?

Yes, the other wiring is only if you need an extension.

If your only phone is going on that socket and your router too, then use the faceplate filter without connecting. If you want phones on an extension elsewhere, then you need to wire 2,3 & 5 (Bl, Or, Bl/W) although you may find the wiring at te extension to be different, so either match that or rewire any extension.

DO NOT fit wire 3 - it's the ring, which is obsolete, and will degrade your broadband speed.

Doesn't really matter if the OP's using a filtered faceplate.

You obviously know very little.

The ring wire is NOT obsolete and is still required for a large number of phones installed in the UK.

It will not degrade broadband speed - it MIGHT in certain circumstances but with a filtered face plate very unlikely.

That comes across a little bit rude!? tongue

I would tend to agree with killie99 and remove any wires to terminal 3.
In my experience it does cause lots of problems and only pretty antique phones will need it... I would suggest disconnecting it and see how you get on. It can always be reconnected.

It states a fact. The wire is not obsolete and an installation I looked at a few weeks back with NEW phones required the ring wire to be in place or none of them would ring except the one connected to the master.
