Re: Router sometimes picks up wrong IP address. Is this norm

[re: billford] [link to this post]

Yeah, I totally agree.

I've just tried setting my router to 'dynamic' with my static LLU connection and the ISP fails to assign an IP address at all.

I know people on dynamic who, having obtained an IP, "hard code" it as static in the router and connect ok.

I guess no two networks are alike!

Maybe I've been lucky... various routers but only 2 ISPs (Metronet and IDNet, both static IPs), I just set the router to "Get IP from the WAN" (or whatever the wording is) and it's never failed yet crazy

I think when I was with Zen (and/or Nildram), I seem to remember the router could be set to dynamic or static - it would still pick up the correct static IP.

But they weren't LLU. BE doesn't require a username or password (I don't know if that's typical of LLU) so not issuing an IP at all is probably the secure way to do it.

Correct.

I have been with Zen (on line 1) for over 7 years (since ADSL became available).
Line two has been with Nildram and Entanet.

These (and other lines, I have set up) always get the correct IP address, with the (DrayTek) routers set to either dynamic or static.

John.

with Be if you use a different router to the one supplied then you have to fudge the MAC address so that the connection is recognised, Sky's password if I remember was derived from the MAC address of the router, really and truly on a fixed line a username and password should not be required to log in to the ISP because the connection is from a KNOWN number.

The bit about the fixed line - not always true - for IPStream connections the CLI/circuit details are not passed to the ISP.

Maybe it could have been implemented that way.

But with my Zen connections (here and 12 miles away), I can use either username at either address and it all works. (or it did last time I took the trouble to try it a few years ago). So a password is needed to stop another Zen user stealing all my bandwidth. crazy

I can not, however, swap usernames (and hence ISPs) on my two local connections.

edit: as the original post was about IP addresses

When I swapped the usernames with my remote line, it swapped the static IP addresses as well. Useful when originally setting up the server for the remote location smile

Now on O2. I haven't used the Be or O2 supplied routers on my Be/O2 line. I've only ever had my Netgear attached and didn't need to fudge the MAC.

Well, I'm sure I read that somewhere, and I have the Be supplied router MAC number in the config of my Netgear DG834GT
