fitting new Master scoket NTE

I'm about to move in a new property. This particular house doesn't have a standard NTE master socket with detachable face plate where the extension wiring would usually go. It's a very old looking junction box. I was wondering is it possible to get my electrician to fit one or does it have to be done by BT? How much would it cost for BT to fit one?

My electrian hasn't connected the new extension wiring to junction box. I heard it's illegal to temper with the junction box since it's owned by BT. Is this true?

There must/should be a master socket at some point as well as the junction box - unless the phone is hardwired to it. And NO you cannot do anything with it.

If the phone is hardwired then BT should sort that out free of charge.

But if there is a master - you can wire direct to the rear of the faceplate and that is all.

Yes (in theory!) it has to be done by BT. This will also ensure you are able to get the most out of your ADSL connection.

To get a modern Master Socket installed can be quite troublesome. BT often quote different prices?

In the original post the OP says oLd

By old, I took it to be a type 20, 30, 35, 52 &c ovalish shaped one.

If he confirms which - old/odd then we will know which way to point him.
