Heavy Packet loss / ping spikes

[link to this post]

Hi, for about 2 year now I have been experiencing difficulties with my Broadband connection, I recently moved to Orange to try and resolve these issues but nothing has since changed.

All of my equipment is new and tested behind the BT socket and appears to be working fine! I have went through endless amounts of raised tickets with BT who have told me there is nothing wrong with my line.

However that is complete and utter rubbish! I have been through just about everything they have asked me to try, provided them with screenshots etc.

It's now got to a point where I cannot even use my connection for most of the day due to it being increasingly slow! Its mostly after 6pm but it also can happen sometimes during the day so I would'nt say that it is ONLY peak times because its quite random.

I think the last option is for me to get an engineer out because im quite sure the problem does not lay at my end!

Heres some screenshots I've just done, if anyone can suggest any kind of help i would be greatful.

You're on a very long line, which could be part of the problem you are seeing.

One of your screen shots shows that your IP profile has dropped to 1750 from an expected 2500. This could have been due to instability on the line causing the line to have a low sync for a few minutes as such, the profile drops and throughput you get is much lower.

Have you thought about running Routerstats(if it supports your router) to see if/when these drops occur.

Matt

There is nothing wrong with the traceroute in your first screenshot, it is simply that orange.co.uk or router along the way are not responding to ping requests.

See, mine is the same:

Are you on a 2Mbps connection? If so... then you are getting as expected... your download speed is corresponding with your IP profile.

Perhaps the problems are contention/traffic shaping on orange's network, which doesn't really suprise me. Time to move ISP?

Ideally what you need to do is get some speedtests done (both using this sites speedtester and the BT one) around 6PM when your connection is starting to go slow...

Yes I think I am on a 2mb connection, But as I said, Ive switched ISP twice now to try and get this sorted! a few year ago i was with 'Freeola' on a 2mb connection and I had no issues what so ever, I then moved to UKFSN which was basically the same ISP [ entanet ] and about 4 months down the line started to get these issues! The speed test dont usually show the ping and packet loss issues because they spike up and down, so It can look stable when it actually isnt! At times it can take me upto a minute to loads google's homepage up, even the images struggle to load.

Also as I mentioned, it's not always just after 6pm it can be during the day as well. But it is NORMALLY after 6pm.

I believe what you are saying, but you need to get some evidence to show what is happening - your first screenshot is showing nothing wrong, your second screenshot is not showing anything wrong* either, and your third suggests you have a long line.

Get dynamic DNS on your router and get a f8lure graph going, this will show if your line is experiencing packetloss or not.

I am no orange expert but I have two friends who have it and it's always slowing down at peak times.

*Wrong in the eyes of your ISP and BT.

thats apparently the live graph, I have enabled pinging on my router but not seeing any results on the graph yet, does it take time?

Edit: Ah it's starting to work now I see.
