He mentions that his modem isnt losing sync, and sync speeds are OK

Yes, this is the strange thing. The underlying VDSL connection seems rock solid. I could probably try another router, just need to reconfigure one of my remote routers.

Got a portable MW radio to help you hunt ? ...
I agree 10-20 minutes with an 'off tuned' MW radio receiver could certainly help identify any malfunctioning device/s

edit:
having re-read the opening post, the old OR modem is staying connected, so its unlikely rein is affecting it, - but then its still worth doing the MW radio test

Well, I have just done exactly that, replaced the router and all is now working again, including the Powerline network. I have also put the gigabit switch back in circuit and that too is working. Thanks for the MW radio suggestion but in all honesty it's a bit of a pain as there is so much noise-generating equipment you have to switch everything off and test one thing at a time.

One of life's mysteries as to why a particular router would suddenly stop playing with the Powerline adapters.

Edit: And I've just remembered to enable ping responses on the router so that my BQM isn't all red!

Yes, I noticed that, I think that's the lowest it's been.
