Trooli FTTP - replace Technicolor DGA4134 with modem/bridge

[link to this post]

Hello

Not sure if anyone can help, but I'm looking for recommendations for a device to pass PPPOE details without acting as a router or firewall on our new FTTP Trooli connection.

I have obtained all PPPOE details (directly from Trooli) and have permission to run own equipment - but I'm unsure what device exactly I should be purchasing.

Is there a simple bridge device recommended that can pass PPPOE details over FTTP much like a simple DSL modem? I don't want it to do anything other than pass data straight to our Smoothwall device.

Our current network looks like this:

Trooli FTTP

Adrant 621 ONT

Trooli Router - replace this with bridge device

Smoothwall

LAN

According to the link below you can configure a PPPoE connection on the Smoothwall device, you shouldn't need any other hardware.

Thanks - but we have an S5.

I'll ask in some other forums. I'm sure there is such a microswitch or bridge we can use but I'm unsure of the correct terminology to find one and would like a recommendation for the most suitable as the lot of the info I'm finding is out of date.

I'm not aware of any device that will negotiate PPPoE and then present the single IP back out of an interface to be assigned to a firewall.

If you could get an additional IP block from Trooli this would make things a lot simpler.

Hi, did you manage to connect your router to trooli FTTP? Im getting their connection soon and read they do not allow our own router to be used. I was searching for ways to get the ppoe username and password to use on my asus router. Would like to know how you got on with your setup.

I'm using different fttp provider. Just horrible one but i also obtained PPOE details. I've tried it with asus rt-n56u and it didn't worked. What is the best gaming router with green gpon port. Will this reduce ping if i get a new gaming router?.

If you want to pass through all PPPoE packets, then just plug whatever it is that's generating the PPPoE session directly into the ONT.

If you want a device which itself generates the PPPoE session, then pretty much by definition it's a router (it's encapsulating IP packets in PPPoE). The username/password is used during the PPPoE session setup - there's a PADI phase for PPPoE, then PPP has the LCP, PAP/CHAP and IPCP phases. Authentication is done during the PAP/CHAP phase. You can't separate this from the other phases.

The ONT *is* the equivalent of the DSL modem. Just plug your Smoothwall directly into the ONT, and configure PPPoE client on the Smoothwall - job done.

Or are you saying that the Smoothwall doesn't have the ability to act as a PPPoE client?

I suggested this on the second post in the thread but the Op replied that it was a smoothwall S5 device, implying that it did not have PPPoE client function which I thought would be unlikely. The odd thing is that I cannot find any reference to a Smoothwall S5 appliance on their website or on web searches so something odd going on here. Maybe it's an S2 which certainly does have a PPPoE client as do all the other models.
